Chapter 7 - The Drainage Valve

"Are you insane? The police are arriving right now; if they catch us tampering with the property, they'll arrest us too!" Elena argued, grabbing her father's arm to stop him.
"They are looking for financial fraud, Elena. But what Marcus hinted at changes everything—it makes Liam's theft look like a petty misdemeanor compared to a thirty-year-old murder," Arthur whispered fiercely, pulling his arm free.
They hurried down the dark stairs and slipped out through the side terrace doors, avoiding the front courtyard where flashing red and blue lights were beginning to paint the white stucco walls.
The luxury pool looked eerie in the twilight, its surface completely still, reflecting the jagged silhouette of the palm trees against the darkening sky.
"Where is the drainage control?" Arthur asked, scanning the stone retaining walls of the patio for a hidden access panel.
"Over near the pump house behind the cabana," Elena replied, leading the way with quick, silent steps over the damp grass.
She wrenched open the metal door of the pump house, revealing a complex maze of copper pipes, digital valves, and high-pressure filtration systems humming quietly in the humid enclosure.
"Manual override lever... it has to be this heavy red iron wheel," Arthur said, gripping the rusted metal valve with both hands and throwing his full weight into turning it.
With a loud, metallic screech of protest, the valve began to rotate, and deep beneath the surface of the sparkling water, a heavy suction sound echoed across the courtyard.
"It's working. The pool is draining," Elena whispered, watching through the glass window as a massive whirlpool began to form in the deep end of the pool.
Thousands of gallons of crystal-clear water rushed into the subterranean drainage grates, creating a loud rushing sound that drowned out the distant chatter of the police officers near the front gates.
As the water level dropped rapidly, exposing the pale blue tiled walls of the pool, a dark, irregular shape emerged from beneath the receding surface in the exact center of the deep end.
"Dad... what is that resting at the bottom?" Elena asked, her voice hitching as she pressed her face against the glass window of the pump house.
The water level cleared the object entirely, revealing a heavy, rusted iron safe measuring roughly three feet square, welded directly into the concrete foundation of the pool floor.

And strapped securely to the top of the sunken safe with thick plastic zip-ties was a second, smaller leather suitcase identical to the one they had found in the master bedroom upstairs.
