Chapter 14 - The Final Surveillance

The video played in crystal-clear high definition, showing Liam standing by the edge of the pool in his soaked navy blue polo shirt, speaking directly to an unseen figure just off-camera.
"The old man took the bait; he drained the pool and opened the safe," Liam's recorded voice echoed softly from the laptop speakers. "As soon as the feds lock down the estate, execute phase two of the transfer."
Arthur leaned closer to the screen, his heart pounding against his ribs as a second figure stepped into the frame—not Viktor, but someone far more unexpected.
It was Marcus, looking remarkably well-preserved for a man who had supposedly been missing and presumed dead for thirty years.
"The Vance empire will be ours by morning, Liam, exactly as we planned it back in Geneva," Marcus said with a cold, triumphant smile, handing Liam a signed document bearing the official seal of the corporate board.
Elena, who had quietly stepped up behind her father, covered her mouth with her hand to stifle a sudden, horrified gasp. "Marcus... he's alive? He faked his own disappearance with Viktor's help all along?"
"They didn't fall out thirty years ago, Elena. It was an orchestrated inside job from the very beginning to systematically bleed Vance Industries dry over three decades," Arthur realized, the ultimate truth finally dawning on him.
The video continued playing, showing Marcus and Liam shaking hands over the edge of the drained pool right where the safe had rested.
"Once Arthur signs the final transfer papers under duress, the federal freeze lifts automatically, and the courts will validate our ownership," Marcus added on the recording before the screen faded to black.
Arthur closed the laptop lid with a heavy click, the glowing Apple logo dimming into darkness as the heavy reality of the situation settled over them.
"They're still out there, Dad. The federal arrests tonight... it was all part of their contingency plan to force the corporate transfer through emergency court channels," Elena whispered, trembling with fresh terror.
"Not while I still draw breath," Arthur said, standing up from the desk with a renewed fire in his gray eyes. "We take this drive straight to the director of the federal field office at sunrise, before their legal team can file the court motion."
He picked up his dark jacket, sliding the flash drive securely into the inner pocket, ready for the final confrontation.

As he turned toward the door to check the hallway, the hotel room's smart television turned on by itself, volume blaring with a breaking news broadcast announcing that Liam Carter had just been released on a multi-million-dollar emergency bail bond.
