Chapter 5 - The Suitcase From The Past

The leather lid popped open with a dry, hollow snap, releasing a heavy cloud of dust that smelled distinctly of old paper, mothballs, and dried sea salt.

"Dad, whose bag is this? Liam didn't bring any old leather luggage; everything he owned was designer carbon-fiber," Elena whispered, stepping cautiously over the threshold.

Arthur reached inside the dark interior, pulling out a faded manila envelope tied securely with a yellowed cotton string. "This isn't Liam's luggage, Elena. This bag belonged to my business partner, Marcus, who vanished thirty years ago under very suspicious circumstances."

Elena stared at the worn leather bag in disbelief, her mind struggling to connect the dots across three decades of family history. "Marcus? The man who supposedly embezzled our company funds and fled to South America before you took over?"

"That is the official story I was forced to tell the board of directors," Arthur said grimly, sliding his thumb beneath the old cotton string to break the seal.

Inside the envelope lay a thick stack of handwritten journals and a single, heavy brass key stamped with the exact same serial number as the one Arthur kept in his jacket pocket.

"If Marcus didn't steal the money back then... then who did?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a frightened whisper as the shadows in the bedroom seemed to lengthen unnaturally.

"Read the first entry, Elena. It starts on the day before he disappeared," Arthur instructed, handing over a yellowed page covered in cramped, frantic handwriting.

Elena squinted at the faded ink under the pale moonlight streaming through the French doors: 'Arthur knows the truth about the Mediterranean investments. If anything happens to me, check the bottom of the old villa pool.'

A cold shiver raced down Elena's spine as she recalled the crystal-clear turquoise water where Liam had been standing just an hour ago. "The pool... Marcus is talking about this exact villa, thirty years before Liam ever bought it."

Before Arthur could reply, the heavy bedroom door slammed shut behind them with a deafening crash, plunging the room into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

"Dad! The door jammed!" Elena cried out, throwing her weight against the heavy wood as frantic scratching noises began to echo from inside the ventilation shaft above their heads.
