Chapter 6 - Whispers In The Vent

"Stand back, Elena, let me handle this," Arthur said, his voice strained as he slammed his shoulder against the heavy oak door, but it didn't budge an inch.
The scratching in the metal vent grew louder, accompanied by a low, mechanical whirring sound like a cassette tape rewinding at high speed in an empty room.
"Someone is up there in the ceiling crawlspace," Elena gasped, clutching her torn cardigan tightly around her chest as she scanned the pitch-black corners of the master bedroom.
Arthur pulled the heavy brass key from his jacket, jamming it frantically into the antique keyhole of the door, praying the internal mechanism hadn't rusted shut over the decades. "Keep your eyes on the vent, Elena. Don't let anything drop down."
With a sharp click, the lock finally yielded, and Arthur yanked the door open just as a heavy metal grate fell from the ceiling vent, clattering violently onto the wooden floorboards.
A small, old-fashioned microcassette recorder rolled out from the darkness of the duct, stopping right at the tip of Arthur's boot with a faint metallic clink.
"What is that?" Elena asked, pointing a trembling finger at the tiny black device resting on the floor.
"It's a voice memo recorder from the nineteen-nineties," Arthur said slowly, kneeling down to pick up the device with cautious fingers. "Marcus always carried one of these to dictate his field notes during construction projects."
"Is there still tape inside? Can it even play after all these years?" Elena asked, stepping closer despite her overwhelming fear.
Arthur pressed the small plastic play button, and for a few agonizing seconds, only heavy static hissed from the tiny built-in speaker. Then, a voice cut through the static—clear, sharp, and unmistakably terrified.
"If you are hearing this tape, it means Arthur found the bag. He thinks I ran away, but he knows damn well what's buried underneath the concrete foundation of the deep end..." the voice of Marcus echoed through the silent bedroom.
Elena covered her mouth with her hands, her eyes wide with horror as she stared out the window toward the moonlit swimming pool outside. "Buried? What did he bury under the pool, Dad?"
Arthur didn't answer; his face had turned entirely pale as he stared down at the microcassette recorder, which suddenly began to smoke slightly from an internal electrical short circuit.
"Dad, drop it! It's going to catch fire!" Elena screamed, knocking the device from his hand just as it sparked and died completely.
The room fell dead silent once more, save for the faint sound of approaching sirens wailing in the distance as police cars turned down the private coastal road toward the villa.

"We need to get to the pool right now, before the authorities seal the crime scene," Arthur said, turning toward the stairs with grim determination.
