Chapter 12 - The Shattered Frame

"Drop the weapon and step away from the table!" a commanding voice echoed through the cabana as three federal agents rushed into the room with weapons drawn.

Viktor's security guards reached for their stun batons, but before they could move, federal badges flashed in the dim light.

"FBI! Nobody moves an inch!" the lead agent shouted, placing a heavy hand on Viktor's shoulder and forcing him down against the mahogany table.

"You're making a grave mistake, Agent. I hold the legal mortgage to this property," Viktor protested, struggling against the handcuffs snapping onto his wrists.

"Your mortgage was flagged by the international financial crimes division twenty minutes ago, Mr. Carter. You're going downtown for conspiracy, extortion, and interstate wire fraud," the agent recited firmly.

Arthur dropped the gold-plated pen onto the contract, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the overwhelming tension finally began to drain from his shoulders.

"Thank God..." Elena whispered, collapsing into a patio chair as federal agents swarmed the cabana to secure the area and recover the stolen emeralds.

"Are you alright, Mr. Vance? Miss Vance?" the lead agent asked, checking their identification credentials against the federal arrest warrants.

"We're physically unharmed, Officer, but you need to check the second-floor nursery immediately," Arthur urged, grabbing the agent's arm. "There's a four-year-old child locked inside, and the window security has been compromised."

The agent nodded sharply, speaking into his shoulder radio as he bolted from the cabana toward the main villa entrance, followed by two armed deputies.

Elena buried her face in her hands, her exhausted mind trying to process the chaotic events of the past twelve hours—from the sunlit pool where Liam had thrown Lily, to this dark, stormy midnight raid.

Viktor was hauled past them toward the waiting federal vans, his cold blue eyes fixed entirely on Arthur with a parting warning. "You think this is the end of it, Arthur? You only found what we wanted you to find."

Arthur ignored him, turning his attention toward the villa doors as the agent reappeared on the second-floor balcony carrying little Lily safely in his arms.

"She's safe, folks! Just a little shaken up from the noise!" the agent called down, descending the stairs carefully into the courtyard.

Elena rushed forward, scooping Lily into a tight, desperate embrace, kissing her blonde pigtails over and over again while the little girl buried her face in her beige dress.

As the federal convoy prepared to depart the luxury villa, Arthur noticed a single flash drive sitting on the floor beneath the mahogany table where Viktor had been sitting.

He bent down, picked up the small black drive with cautious fingers, and slipped it quietly into his coat pocket just as the head agent walked back over to them.
