Chapter 3 - The Broken Slip Dress

"Don't you dare touch me with the hands you used to steal from my family," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of profound grief and boiling rage.
"Elena, please, keep your voice down, let's talk about this inside away from these vultures," Liam pleaded, his eyes darting frantically toward the gathering crowd of resort staff and curious tourists.
"There is nothing left to discuss, Liam. You lied from the very first moment we met," Elena said, her fingernails digging deep into her own palms until the skin turned white.
Arthur stepped closer to his daughter, placing a heavy, comforting hand on her trembling shoulder. "Come with me, sweetheart. You and Lily don't belong in this house of cards anymore."
"I am not going anywhere with him, Dad. This is my home too," Elena retorted, though her defiant tone faltered as one of the police officers stepped past Liam and slapped cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Mr. Liam Carter, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and identity theft," the officer recited monotonously, reading the Miranda rights as Liam was forcefully turned around against the marble patio.
"You'll pay for this, Arthur. Both of you will regret the day you ever crossed me," Liam snarled over his shoulder as they hauled him toward the waiting squad car.
Arthur watched him go without a word, his expression devoid of triumph, replaced instead by a heavy, sorrowful fatigue. "Get your things, Elena. We are catching the evening flight back to Chicago."
As Elena turned toward the grand double doors of the villa, a sharp tear ripped down the side of her beige silk slip dress, catching on a loose nail in the wooden threshold. She looked down at the ruined fabric, realizing that every luxury she had embraced over the past two years was literally falling apart at the seams.
Inside the foyer, the smart-home control panel flickered violently, cutting off the indoor climate control and plunging the hallway into sudden, suffocating darkness.
"Dad? Did you feel that draft?" Elena asked, stopping dead in her tracks as a chilling gust of air swept through the locked, sealed house.

Arthur didn't answer immediately; instead, he stared intently at the antique grandfather clock near the stairs, which had inexplicably stopped ticking at the exact second Liam was pushed into the police cruiser.
