Chapter 2 - The Freeze On Paradise

"An arrest warrant? There has clearly been some catastrophic mistake here, Officer," Liam said, forcing a calm smile while stepping between the police and his soaked clothes.
"Step away from the ledge, Mr. Carter. This isn't about a mistake," the stern man in the tailored suit said, opening the manila folder to reveal a series of stamped federal documents.
Elena clutched her arms, shivering despite the blistering Mediterranean heat, her beige silk slip dress suddenly feeling less like luxury attire and more like a flimsy trap. "Arthur, what is he talking about? What did you do?" she demanded, turning her tear-filled eyes toward her father.
Arthur adjusted his dark jacket, his expression grim as he handed little Lily over to a trusted nanny who had just emerged from the villa's side door. "I didn't do anything illegal, Elena. I merely exposed the truth about the man you invited into our lives and our home."
"You ruined everything out of pure, unadulterated spite!" Liam snapped, his voice rising as he stepped closer to Arthur, ignoring the warning gesture of the nearest police officer.
"I exposed a thief who drained my corporate pension fund to buy this very luxury villa," Arthur countered loudly, pointing a trembling finger at the gleaming pool behind them.
The officer with the folder cleared his throat loudly, stepping directly between the two men. "Mr. Vance is correct, Mr. Carter. Our forensic accountants traced three million dollars of embezzled assets directly from Vance Industries into the offshore holding company that purchased this estate last month."
Liam's face drained of color, the confident facade cracking instantly to reveal a cornered, desperate animal. "That's a complete fabrication. Arthur doctored those records to destroy my reputation because he never accepted our marriage."
"The signature on the wire transfer is yours, Liam, notarized in Zurich on the exact day you proposed to my daughter," Arthur said quietly, stepping forward with a chillingly calm demeanor.
Elena staggered backward, her back hitting a concrete pillar as the horrifying realization set in. "You bought this place with my father's stolen money? Every single luxury, this pool, the clothes I'm wearing... it's all stolen?"

Liam reached out to grab her hand, but she flinched away as if he were carrying a deadly contagion. "Elena, listen to me, I can explain every single cent."
