Chapter 1 - The Splash Of Cold Truth
"What the hell do you think you are doing, Arthur? Have you completely lost your mind?" Liam shouted, wiping chlorinated water from his eyes as he thrashed in the deep end of the luxurious villa pool.
"You are an irresponsible, reckless fraud, Liam, and you will never touch my granddaughter again!" Arthur roared back, his chest heaving under his dark jacket as he clutched four-year-old Lily against his shoulder with a fierce, protective grip.
Elena stood frozen near the edge of the sparkling pool, her half-empty glass of white wine slipping from her trembling fingers to shatter against the Italian marble tiles. A thin line of expensive chardonnay trickled across the pristine patio like a spreading wound, matching the sudden, heavy silence that fell over the sun-drenched resort courtyard.
"Dad, put her down right now! You are making a massive scene in front of everyone!" Elena yelled, her voice cracking with a mixture of absolute shock and suppressed panic.
"I am saving her from a man who treats a child's life like a sick game!" Arthur shouted, refusing to release Lily, who sobbed quietly into the fabric of his dark jacket.
Guests scattered along the terrace whispered behind tinted sunglasses, their cocktail glasses hovering near their mouths as they stared at the soaked man in the navy blue polo. Liam pulled himself up the pool ladder, his soaked beige shorts clinging tightly to his skin, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.
"You had no right to lay a hand on me, old man," Liam hissed, stepping forward with water dripping from his short dark beard.
"I have every right when you throw a child toward the water just to prove a point," Arthur replied, his gray eyes narrowing with cold fury.
Before Liam could lunge forward, the heavy front gates of the villa swung open with a loud metallic groan, revealing two armed local police officers flanked by a tall, stern-faced man holding a thick manila folder.
