Chapter 8 - The Laboratory of Secrets

Dr. Evelyn Vance didn't look panicked; instead, her calm, calculating expression matched Julian’s own icy demeanor as she leaned back against the glowing server rack, crossing her arms over her crisp white lab coat.
“Well, well, Julian. They said you were still confined to a wheelchair, but I always knew your stubbornness would defy even the most aggressive neurotoxins,” Evelyn said, her voice echoing smoothly through the cold subterranean corridor.
Clara kept her hand firmly resting on her encrypted tablet, her instincts screaming that something was deeply wrong. “Step away from the terminal, Doctor. Every keystroke you make is currently being logged by federal cyber-forensics.”
Evelyn let out a sharp, dismissive laugh. “Let them log it, young lady. By the time the feds manage to decrypt this server architecture, the primary files detailing the exact chemical composition of the paralyzing agent used on Mr. Mercer will have been permanently incinerated in an off-site cloud vault.”
Julian strode forward, his footsteps ringing sharply against the metal grating of the floor. He stopped just ten feet away from her, his dark eyes burning with restrained fury. “You manufactured the neurotoxin that stole three years of my life, Evelyn. You and Victor thought you could play God with my biology and simply walk away.”
“We didn't play God, Julian. We were simply following the directives of the board's long-term strategic plan,” Evelyn replied smoothly, tilting her head with chilling clinical detachment. “You were becoming a liability. Your aggressive corporate reforms were going to liquidate half our pharmaceutical holdings to fund public health initiatives. You left us no choice.”
“Murder is not a strategic plan, Evelyn. It is a prison sentence,” Julian stated, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper.
Evelyn smiled, a dark, unsettling glint appearing in her eyes. “You think you've won because you stood up at a gala and locked up Arthur and Victor? You are standing right in the center of a much larger spiderweb, Julian. The Mercer Foundation was never just a corporate entity; it was a front for a global medical trials syndicate.”
Before Julian could demand answers, Clara’s tablet suddenly blared a deafening emergency klaxon. The screen turned pitch black, replaced by a single, pulsing line of text: FACILITY LOCKDOWN INITIATED. EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS TERMINATED.

The heavy steel fire doors at both ends of the subterranean hallway slammed shut with a thunderous, echoing crash, plunging the corridor into total darkness before emergency red backup lights flickered to life, casting an eerie, blood-red glow over the entire room.
