Chapter 6 - Awakening the Board

The private executive boardroom on the top floor of the Mercer Foundation headquarters was suffocatingly quiet at three o'clock in the morning. The mahogany table, polished to a mirror shine, reflected the pale light of the computer monitors surrounding the room. Julian sat at the head of the long table in a high-backed leather chair, looking every bit the ruthless corporate titan he had always been. His black tuxedo jacket was unbuttoned, and his sleeves were rolled up slightly, revealing the strong, capable forearms of a man who had reclaimed his life.

Clara stood near the door, clutching a steaming cup of black coffee she had brewed herself. She was no longer wearing her maid uniform; instead, she wore a simple, professional navy blazer and trousers Julian had quietly had delivered from a high-end boutique hours earlier.

“The remaining five board members are arriving now, Mr. Mercer,” Clara reported softly, glancing at her tablet screen. “They look entirely broken after the overnight federal asset seizures.”

“Let them in, Clara,” Julian replied without looking up from his laptop. “It is time to settle accounts.”

The heavy oak doors swung open, and the remaining executives filed in one by one. Their faces were pale, their designer suits looking rumpled and exhausted from a night spent answering aggressive federal interrogators. They took their assigned seats, avoiding Julian’s piercing gaze entirely. Among them sat Thomas Vance, the oldest and most influential board member, whose hands shook visibly as he adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles.

“Julian,” Thomas began weakly, clearing his throat. “We... we had no idea Victor and Arthur were embezzling foundation funds behind your back. We were completely deceived.”

Julian closed his laptop with a sharp snap that echoed loudly in the silent room. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the polished mahogany table and locking his dark eyes onto Thomas.

“Deceived, Thomas? You signed off on the medical negligence settlement that transferred my voting rights to Victor while I was in a medically induced coma,” Julian said softly, his voice cutting through the heavy air like a scalpel. “You didn't just look the other way; you charged a handsome consulting fee for your blindness.”

Thomas swallowed hard, unable to meet Julian's gaze. The silence in the room grew heavy, oppressive, and entirely inescapable.

“What do you want from us, Julian?” another board member asked desperately. “Do you want to strip the company apart? Liquidate everything?”

“Liquidation is for cowards,” Julian stated coldly. He stood up slowly, walking toward the large floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the awakening city below. “We are going to rebuild this foundation from its corrupted foundation up. Every illegal contract cancelled. Every stolen asset returned to the public trust.”

Clara watched him from across the room, feeling a profound sense of awe mixed with a lingering, unsettling question. Julian had won his company back, he had exposed the conspirators, and he had reclaimed his physical autonomy. Yet, as she watched the cold, hardened look in his eyes as he stared out at the skyline, she realized the battle for his soul was far from over.

Suddenly, Clara’s encrypted tablet buzzed violently on the side table, flashing a high-priority encrypted alert originating directly from an unknown IP address inside the building.
