Chapter 10 - Smoke and Steel

The concussive blast blew the heavy steel maintenance hatch clean off its reinforced bolts, sending a massive cloud of gray dust and concrete debris cascading down onto the floor of the subterranean corridor. The emergency red lights flickered violently, casting erratic shadows across the smoke-filled hallway.
Commander Thorne instinctively flinched, his suppressed automatic weapon shifting upward toward the breached ceiling hatch just as a thick canister of tactical smoke dropped silently through the opening.
“Down, Clara!” Julian commanded sharply, dropping his tall frame to the metallic grating and pulling the young waitress down beside him just as the smoke canister hissed open, releasing a blinding, dense white fog that instantly choked the corridor.
“Secure the hatch! Shoot anything that moves!” Thorne roared through the thick smoke, blindly firing three suppressed rounds into the empty air near the server racks.
Dr. Evelyn Vance coughed violently, stumbling backward against the humming machinery as the suffocating smoke filled her lungs. “Thorne! Get us out of here! The breach means federal backup found the sub-grid frequency!”
Through the thick, roiling white smoke, a heavy combat boot slammed down onto the metal grating. A heavily armored federal tactical operator dropped silently through the ceiling opening, followed immediately by a second agent. They moved with terrifying, synchronized precision, weapons raised and laser sights painting the smoke-filled room with crimson lines.
“Federal agents! Drop your weapons and put your hands behind your head!” a deep, commanding voice bellowed through the tactical comms.
Thorne spun around, attempting to swing his rifle toward the descending agents, but Julian moved with lightning speed. Emerging from the floor-level fog, Julian lunged forward, executing a precise, devastating sweep kick that caught Thorne completely off guard, sweeping the burly mercenary’s legs out from under him and sending him crashing hard onto the iron grating.
The suppressed weapon clattered out of Thorne’s grip, sliding across the floor directly into Clara’s waiting hands. Without hesitation, Clara scooped up the firearm, kicking it away into a dark corner, and stood up, breathing heavily as federal agents swarmed the fallen mercenary, slamming titanium handcuffs onto his wrists.
Evelyn Vance attempted to slip away toward the emergency service exit, but two federal operatives blocked her path instantly, securing her arms behind her back with cold, mechanical efficiency.
Julian stood tall amid the clearing smoke, adjusting the lapels of his black tuxedo jacket with his characteristic composure. He looked down at the defeated commander lying on the floor.
“As I said before, Commander,” Julian said coldly, his voice ringing clearly in the quiet room. “Underestimating your opponent is always a fatal error.”
Clara walked over to Julian, handing him her tablet, which had finally reconnected to the external network. The main screen displayed an unbroken stream of green authorization lights. “The entire offline database has been successfully mirrored to the Department of Justice servers, Mr. Mercer. The syndicate’s global infrastructure is fully exposed.”

Julian nodded slowly, his expression remaining grim and resolute. “Then our work here in the basement is finished. Let’s go upstairs. The board is waiting for their final lesson.”
