Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ballroom

Victor Sterling’s manicured fingers tightened around the stem of his crystal glass until the delicate stem threatened to snap under the immense pressure. He had spent millions ensuring Julian Mercer would remain a broken, wheelchair-bound prisoner for the rest of his natural life. Seeing Julian standing upright, tall and commanding in his bespoke black tuxedo, sent a violent jolt of pure panic straight through Victor’s hardened spine. The whispers among the elite guests swelled into a deafening wave of scandal and confusion, but Julian ignored them all. His dark, sharp eyes remained locked exclusively on Victor across the crowded parquet floor.
The young waitress, still trembling slightly from the sudden sequence of events, brushed down the crisp apron of her maid uniform. “Thank you, sir,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring tide of gossip echoing through the high-ceilinged hall.
“You are very welcome,” Julian replied softly, his gaze never once wavering from Victor’s retreating figure. “What is your name, child?”
“Clara, sir. Clara Hayes,” she replied, looking up at him with a mixture of awe and profound confusion.
“Stay close to me tonight, Clara. Things are about to become rather turbulent in this room,” Julian instructed quietly, his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument.
Across the room, Victor had already turned on his heel, signaling his personal security detail to cut through the crowd. Julian took a slow, purposeful step forward, his legs proving every bit as strong and reliable as they had been before the engineered accident. The blue plaid blanket lay abandoned on the leather seat of the wheelchair behind him like a discarded skin. The realization hit the surrounding guests like physical blows; the entire paralysis had been an elaborate, calculated deception designed to draw out the conspirators hiding within the Mercer Foundation board.
Clara instinctively fell into step beside him, sensing the shifting gravity of the room. “Mr. Mercer, they are calling security. The board president looks like he is going to have a seizure.”
“Let him,” Julian said coldly. “A seizure is the least of their collective worries tonight.”
As they approached the main exit, a heavy-set man in an expensive tailored suit blocked their path, his face flushed with righteous indignation. It was Arthur Pendelton, the senior legal counsel for the foundation and one of the primary architects of Julian’s corporate ousting.
“Julian! What kind of sick theatrical stunt are you pulling here?” Arthur barked, his voice dripping with defensive venom. “You have committed massive securities fraud by figning a permanent disability to maintain executive voting power!”
Julian stopped, towering a full head over Arthur. A slow, razor-sharp smile crept across his handsome face. He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper that only Arthur could hear.
“Fraud, Arthur? Or is it simply the long-awaited resurrection of the man you and Victor tried to murder three years ago?”
May you like
Arthur’s face instantly drained of all color, his lips parting in a silent, horrified gasp as he realized his deepest, darkest secret had just been exposed.
