Chapter 7 - The Anonymous Signal

The harsh vibration of Clara’s encrypted tablet cut sharply through the tense silence of the executive boardroom, startling the exhausted board members who jumped in their leather seats. Clara stepped quickly toward the table, her eyes scanning the glowing screen where a string of raw code and a pulsing red warning icon flashed erratically.

“Mr. Mercer,” Clara said, her voice tight with sudden concern as she looked up from the device. “We have an unauthorized data extraction happening right now on the secure basement server grid.”

Julian spun away from the window instantly, his dark eyes narrowing with intense suspicion. “The basement grid was supposed to be completely isolated during the federal raid last night. Who authorized access to the legacy mainframes?”

“No one on our active roster,” Clara replied rapidly, her fingers flying across the keypad to trace the digital footprint. “The bypass code being used is an old master override. It’s an administrative key that only three people ever possessed—you, Victor Sterling, and...” She paused, her breath catching in her throat as the decryption algorithm finally resolved the name attached to the terminal login.

“And who?” Julian demanded, stepping up beside her and staring down at the glowing screen.

“Your former chief of medical research, Dr. Evelyn Vance,” Clara whispered, reading the name aloud.

The entire boardroom erupted into chaotic murmurs. Thomas Vance slammed his hands down on the mahogany table, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson. “That is impossible! Evelyn is my niece. She hasn’t set foot in this building since the accident three years ago. She relocated to Zurich to run a private pharmaceutical lab!”

“Or so you all were led to believe,” Julian said coldly, his jaw clenching tightly. He grabbed his black tuxedo jacket from the back of the chair and slipped it on with swift, calculated movements. “Clara, grab your gear. We are going down to the sub-basement.”

“Should I call federal backup, sir?” Clara asked, keeping pace with his long, purposeful strides as they exited the boardroom.

“No time. If Evelyn is scrubbing the remaining clinical data from my accident, she’s erasing the physical proof of how they induced my paralysis in the first place,” Julian warned, his voice dangerously low. “If she deletes those files, we lose the final piece of the criminal case against the entire medical syndicate.”

They rushed down the private service elevator, plunging deep into the subterranean levels of the Mercer Foundation headquarters where the air grew noticeably colder and smelled faintly of ozone and old dust. The heavy metal doors slid open with a metallic scrape, revealing a dimly lit, labyrinthine hallway lined with humming server racks that stretched endlessly into the shadows.

A lone figure stood at the far end of the corridor, bathed in the harsh blue light of an open terminal rack. It was a woman in a sharp white lab coat, her dark hair pulled back into a tight bun, frantically typing commands into the glowing console.

“Dr. Vance,” Julian called out, his voice echoing authoritatively down the metallic hallway.

The woman froze mid-keystroke. Slowly, she turned around to face them, a chilling, triumphant smile playing across her lips.
