Chapter 3 - The Confession in the Hallway

Arthur Pendelton staggered backward, his expensive leather loafers squeaking against the polished marble floor as the full weight of Julian’s words crashed down upon him. The carefully constructed corporate empire Arthur had spent years helping Victor dismantle was threatening to collapse in a single, catastrophic second.

“You... you have no proof of anything,” Arthur stammered, his voice cracking loudly enough to draw anxious glances from the nearest clusters of wealthy socialites sipping champagne nearby.

“Proof?” Julian let out a low, humorless chuckle that chilled Clara to her core. “Arthur, my dear friend, I spent thirty-six months staring at the ceiling of a rehabilitation ward while my mind was entirely clear. Every corporate wire transfer, every falsified medical record, every offshore shell company you and Victor established has been meticulously cataloged. The Federal Bureau of Investigation received the initial data packet precisely at eight o'clock tonight.”

Arthur’s eyes bulged in absolute terror. “You planned this. All of it. The wheelchair, the helplessness, the public gala—it was all a trap!”

“It was an invitation, Arthur. And you and Victor RSVP'd with your crimes,” Julian stated smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his flawless black tuxedo jacket.

Before Arthur could formulate another desperate excuse, heavy footsteps echoed down the grand corridor. Two federal agents in tailored charcoal suits stepped out from the shadows of the arched stone entryway, their gold badges gleaming unmistakably under the wall sconces. They flanked Arthur with quiet, professional efficiency, cutting off any possibility of escape.

“Arthur Pendelton?” the lead agent asked calmly, resting his hand near his hip. “We need you to come with us to answer some questions regarding corporate embezzlement and conspiracy to commit murder.”

Arthur looked from the federal agents back to Julian, whose expression remained carved from absolute ice. Realizing the trap was completely sealed, Arthur slumped his shoulders in total defeat, allowing the agents to guide him away without offering a single word of resistance.

Clara watched the surreal scene unfold in stunned silence, finally grasping the immense scale of what she had accidentally stumbled into. She turned to Julian, her eyes wide with a mixture of respect and deep apprehension. “Mr. Mercer... who are you really?”

Julian looked down at the young waitress, his harsh exterior softening just a fraction. He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, guiding her away from the gawking crowd toward a private terrace overlooking the glittering skyline of the city.

“I am simply a man taking back what belongs to him, Clara,” Julian said softly. “And tonight, we have only just begun.”
