Chapter 12 - The Message from Zurich

The sudden, sharp chime of Clara’s encrypted tablet broke the quiet serenity of the executive boardroom. Clara looked down at the screen, her eyebrows furrowing in deep confusion as an incoming satellite transmission request flashed across the display, originating directly from an undisclosed medical facility in Zurich, Switzerland.

“Mr. Mercer, you need to see this,” Clara said, holding out the tablet so Julian could read the incoming transmission logs. “The signal isn't coming from the Department of Justice or local servers. It’s an encrypted direct feed from Zurich.”

Julian stepped closer, his dark eyes scanning the incoming data stream. The sender's ID was heavily encrypted, but the cryptographic signature attached to the transmission belonged to someone he thought he would never hear from again—Dr. Marcus Vance, Evelyn’s estranged older brother and the former lead neurosurgeon of the European Medical Consortium, who had mysteriously vanished six years ago following a massive internal whistleblowing scandal.

“Accept the feed, Clara,” Julian instructed calmly, his jaw tightening slightly.

Clara tapped the screen, and the tablet's high-definition display flickered to life. The video feed showed a dimly lit, sterile office overlooking the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps. An older man with silver-streaked hair and sharp, intelligent eyes looked directly into the camera lens.

“If you are watching this recording, Julian, it means my sister Evelyn has failed to protect the syndicate's core archives, and you have successfully reclaimed your foundation,” Dr. Marcus Vance began, his voice steady and grave.

Julian stepped closer to the screen, his gaze fixed on the man who had once tried to warn him about the syndicate's true nature years before the staged accident. “Marcus. We thought you were dead.”

“Dead is a very convenient status in our profession, Julian,” Marcus replied grimly on the screen. “I went into deep hiding the moment I discovered what Victor Sterling and the board were planning for you. They didn't just want your corporate voting rights; they were testing an experimental neural-interface neurotoxin designed to induce permanent paralysis while keeping the victim's cognitive functions entirely intact.”

Clara gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth. “They wanted to trap your mind inside your own body indefinitely?”

“Precisely,” Marcus confirmed on the video feed. “And Evelyn was the lead pharmacologist who synthesized the compound. But my sister was only a mid-level player in a much larger, international pharmaceutical conglomerate known as Apex Bio-Systems.”

The board room grew deathly quiet. Julian’s expression hardened into a mask of pure steel. “Apex Bio-Systems. They are the primary financiers behind several major global biotech firms.”

“And they are not going to let you dismantle their entire operational framework quietly, Julian,” Marcus warned urgently through the screen. “Now that your public resurrection at the gala has proven the neurotoxin failed, Apex has already activated their secondary contingency protocol. They are sending an elite retrieval team to the United States tonight.”

Before Marcus could finish his final warning sentence, the encrypted video feed suddenly hissed with violent static, cutting out completely as the screen flashed a stark, red warning message: CONNECTION LOST. SIGNAL JAMMED AT SOURCE.
