Chapter 5 - The Silver Pistol

“Don't you dare move another inch, either of you!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing sharply against the cold stone walls of the terrace. The elegant composure she had worn inside the ballroom was entirely gone, replaced by the frantic, unhinged desperation of a cornered animal.

Julian didn't flinch. With agonizing slowness, he stepped slightly in front of Clara, placing his tall frame directly between the young waitress and the barrel of the gun.

“Put the weapon down, Eleanor,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, rich with authority. “Waving a firearm on a public hotel terrace surrounded by federal agents inside is not going to save your stake in the foundation.”

“Shut up! Just shut your arrogant mouth, Julian!” Eleanor sobbed hysterically, her hand shaking violently as she gripped the silver pistol. “You ruined everything! Three years of meticulous planning, three years of playing the devoted, grieving wife while you sat rotting in that stupid chair, and you ruined it all in ten seconds!”

“Devoted?” Julian let out a cold, cutting laugh. “You cleared my personal accounts the very week I was admitted to the trauma ward, Eleanor. You and Victor thought my silence was permanent.”

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the gun trembling just feet away from her face. Her hand brushed against the encrypted flash drive still resting in Julian’s outstretched palm. She needed to move, to act, but her muscles locked up entirely from sheer terror.

“Step away from him, you little maid trash,” Eleanor hissed, pointing the barrel directly at Clara’s chest. “This doesn't concern you. Get on your knees or I swear I will end you right here.”

“She stays,” Julian interrupted, his eyes narrowing with lethal focus. He took one deliberate step forward, ignoring the warning tremor in Eleanor’s trigger finger. “If you want to pull that trigger, Eleanor, you answer to me. Not Clara.”

“I’ll kill both of you!” Eleanor screamed, her finger tightening convulsively against the cold metal of the trigger.

Suddenly, the heavy glass terrace door shattered inward as three federal agents in tactical gear swarmed the balcony, tackling Eleanor violently to the marble floor before she could fire a single shot. The silver pistol skidded across the stone, clattering harmlessly against the balustrade.

Julian stood completely unmoved amid the chaos, breathing slowly and steadily as Eleanor was handcuffed and hauled away screaming profanities into the night sky.

Clara slumped against the stone wall, her knees finally giving out as the adrenaline drained from her body. Julian reached down, effortlessly scooping the encrypted flash drive off the floor and sliding it securely into Clara’s trembling hand.

“Get inside, Clara,” Julian commanded quietly, looking down at her with an unreadable expression. “The real work begins now.”
