Chapter 13 - The Second Contingency

The tablet screen went completely black, the encrypted transmission from Zurich terminated abruptly by a powerful, localized signal jammer. The heavy silence of the executive boardroom returned, thick and suffocating.

“They cut the feed,” Clara said, her voice trembling slightly as she stared down at the dead screen. “Marcus was warning us about Apex Bio-Systems. If their retrieval team is already in the United States, we don't have much time.”

Julian didn't hesitate. He turned away from the table, his mind calculating every possible tactical move with ruthless efficiency. “Apex doesn't operate like local corporate criminals. They don't use courtrooms or proxy lawsuits; they use targeted eradication.”

“Then we need to leave this building immediately,” Clara urged, stepping toward the door. “If the federal agents haven't secured the perimeter against an international syndicate—”

“Leaving the building is exactly what they want us to do,” Julian interrupted calmly, walking toward the large floor-to-ceiling windows. He looked down at the rain-slicked street far below, where a sleek, unmarked black sedan had just pulled up near the side service entrance. Two men in dark trench coats stepped out of the vehicle, moving with the cold, practiced discipline of professional operatives.

“They’re already here,” Clara whispered, peering over his shoulder through the glass.

“Yes, they are,” Julian replied, his voice unnervingly steady. He turned to face her, his dark eyes softening with a deep, protective intensity. “Clara, listen to me very carefully. You are going to take the private encrypted drive containing the Zurich archives and the sub-basement server mirrors, use the secure executive freight elevator down to the underground parking garage, and take my personal vehicle out through the emergency service tunnel.”

“And what about you?” Clara demanded, her voice rising with fierce resistance. “I am not running away while you stay here to face an Apex hit squad alone!”

“You are not running away, Clara. You are ensuring that the evidence survives,” Julian stated firmly, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. “If I walk out the front doors with you, we both become targets. If I stay here to draw their attention, you make it safely to the federal field office downtown with the complete archive.”

Clara looked into his intense, unyielding eyes, seeing the profound weight of everything he had endured and everything he was willing to sacrifice to ensure true justice finally prevailed. A heavy tear slipped down her cheek, but she nodded slowly, accepting the dangerous responsibility.

“I won’t let you down, Mr. Mercer,” she whispered.

“I know you won't,” Julian replied softly. He turned away, walking toward the heavy oak doors of the boardroom just as a muffled, heavy explosion echoed from the lower levels of the building, signaling that Apex’s retrieval team had breached the main lobby security grid.
