Chapter 8 - The Fork in the Drain

The subterranean tunnel sloped downward sharply, the air growing cooler and damper as they pressed deeper into the concrete labyrinth. The sound of the hydraulic breaching tool pounding against the utility door faded behind them, replaced by the rhythmic, heavy dripping of water echoing off the curved ceiling.

Julian led the pack, sweeping his tactical flashlight back and forth across the damp walls while keeping one hand on his firearm. Lucas and Leo ran close behind him, their small dress shoes splashing loudly in the shallow puddles that pooled along the concrete floor.

Elena brought up the middle, shining her phone light down the dark gaps between rusted water pipes, while Clara kept her eyes locked firmly on the back of Julian’s black suit jacket, her mind racing with a mixture of fear and bitter resentment.

"How much farther to the canal?" Clara called out, her voice echoing sharply against the stone walls as she gasped for breath in the heavy air.

"About four hundred yards," Julian shouted back without slowing his pace. "Keep moving! If we stop now, the damp air will slow us down, and they'll catch our thermal signatures."

Suddenly, the tunnel opened up into a wide, circular subterranean junction where three massive concrete pipes converged, creating a chilling subterranean intersection. Julian came to an abrupt halt, holding up his left hand to signal the group to freeze.

Elena bumped gently into Clara, both women shining their lights across the three identical drainage tunnels branching off into absolute darkness.

"Which pipe?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a tense whisper. "They all look exactly the same."

Julian crouched down, sweeping his flashlight beam across the muddy sediment covering the junction floor. His dark eyes locked onto a faint, half-erased footprint stamped into the soft mud near the mouth of the center tunnel.

"Someone dragged a heavy crate through the middle pipe," Julian muttered, standing back up slowly as his tattooed neck flexed with tension. "That's our route. It leads directly to the municipal stormwater basin near the river."

Clara stared down the center tunnel, her expression hardening into deep skepticism as she crossed her arms over her sequin gown.

"Wait a minute," Clara challenged, stepping directly into Julian’s line of sight. "How do you know that footprint wasn't left there intentionally to herd us right into an ambush?"

Julian turned his sharp, stern gaze toward her, his jaw tightening visibly.

"Because the tread pattern matches the boots of the man who gave Lucas the silver coin upstairs," Julian replied coldly. "He wants us to follow him. He's playing a game, and right now, we don't have the luxury of refusing to play."

Lucas suddenly let out a sharp gasp, pointing his small finger down the left-hand tunnel where a faint red glowing ember blinked twice in the pitch darkness.

"Dad... someone is standing down there," Lucas whispered, his voice trembling so hard the words barely formed.

May you like

Julian spun around instantly, raising his weapon toward the left tunnel just as a low, mechanical whirring sound echoed from the shadows, followed by the metallic click of a tripwire snapping into place.
