Chapter 12 - The Runoff Sluice

The explosion echoed through the concrete drainage pipe like rolling thunder, sending a hot wave of air and gritty black soot surging down the tunnel. Julian pushed Clara, Elena, and the twin boys ahead of him, his broad shoulders scraping against the damp brick ceiling as he waded waist-deep through the rushing runoff water.

"Keep going! Don't stop for anything!" Julian yelled over the roar of the rushing water, his muscular frame shielding the rear as they hurried deeper into the subterranean drainage network.

Clara held tightly onto Leo and Lucas, her elegant emerald gown ruined, caked in mud, grease, and soot. Her breathing came in ragged, furious gasps as the adrenaline of survival gave way to a cold, burning resentment that threatened to choke her.

After scrambling through the winding pipe for nearly twenty minutes, the narrow tunnel finally opened up into a massive underground reservoir chamber where the water slowed down into a wide, stagnant pool beneath the dim glow of an exterior maintenance hatch.

Julian dragged himself onto the dry concrete ledge, immediately hauling the boys up, followed by Elena and Clara. They collapsed onto the cold floor, coughing violently as they tried to catch their breath in the humid underground air.

Clara stood up abruptly, shaking off Elena’s comforting hand as she confronted Julian, her eyes blazing with suppressed fury.

"Forty million dollars, Julian," Clara hissed, her voice trembling with a rage that eclipsed her fear. "Viktor wasn't lying, was he? You didn't just walk away from the syndicate like some righteous hero. You robbed them blind, and you dragged me and my sons into your war as living shields!"

Julian stood to his full height, his tattoos flexing beneath his ruined black shirt as he stared down at her with a heavy, pained expression.

"I did it for us, Clara," Julian answered, his voice dropping into a low, defensive rumble. "The syndicate was going to execute me anyway for refusing their final contract. Taking their funds was the only leverage I had to buy our new identities, our home, and our freedom."

"Freedom?" Clara laughed bitterly, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Is this what freedom looks like? Hiding in filth, dodging bullets, and listening to my nine-year-old sons beg for their lives because their father is a thief?"

Elena stepped between them, her golden dress stained and torn, holding her hands up in a placating gesture.

"Stop arguing, both of you," Elena urged urgently, shining her phone light toward the ceiling hatch. "Viktor said this sluice led to the river canal, but look at the security lock on that hatch. It's an electronic biometric keypad powered by an independent generator."

Julian turned his attention to the heavy steel hatch overhead, stepping up to examine the glowing red keypad mounted beside the handle.

"It requires a high-level administrative iris scan or a direct override code," Julian muttered, pulling the heavy tactical bag Viktor had thrown to him during the explosion.

Julian unzipped the bag, revealing a sleek laptop, a satellite communicator, and a heavy iron hard drive stamped with the syndicate's master crest.

"What is that?" Clara asked, stepping closer despite her anger.

"It's the master database Viktor promised," Julian said grimly, powering on the laptop. "If I plug this drive into the hatch override, it will clear our biometric profiles from the entire city surveillance network."

Before Julian could connect the cable, the screen flickered to life, displaying a live video feed of the exterior canal dock—and a terrifying sight that made his blood run cold.
