Chapter 3 - Darkness Falls

Total darkness swallowed the banquet hall, replaced a second later by the harsh, amber glow of emergency exit signs casting long, eerie shadows across the marble floors. High-end laughter gave way to confused murmurs and the scraping of expensive chairs against polished stone.
Julian’s instincts took over in a fraction of a second. He lunged forward through the gloom, his muscular arms wrapping securely around Lucas and Leo, pulling both boys down beneath the heavy oak table.
"Stay down!" Julian barked in a harsh, authoritative whisper, his hand sliding inside his jacket to grip the cold steel of a concealed firearm. "Do not move, do not breathe, and whatever you do, do not make a sound."
Across the table, Clara’s silhouette stood rigid against the dim amber light.
"Julian, where are you?" Clara called out, her voice pitching slightly higher with panic as the sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the vaulted entryway. "The kids are terrified! We need to get out of this building right now."
"Don't move, Clara!" Julian yelled back, his eyes straining to pierce the shadows. "If you stand up in this open space, you're making yourself a target for whoever just cut the main power grid."
Elena knelt beside Julian, her breath coming in shallow, controlled gasps as she kept one hand on Lucas's shoulder to keep the boy from bolting.
"The backup generator should have kicked in by now," Elena whispered urgently, her fingers digging into Julian’s black sleeve. "The power didn't fail due to a storm or a blown fuse. Someone down in the basement override room deliberately severed the main lines."
Julian swore under his breath, his sharp eyes scanning the perimeter of the room where shadowy figures began moving systematically between the tables. They weren't standard hotel security guards; they moved with military precision, wearing dark tactical gear that blended seamlessly into the gloom.
"They're sweeping the room," Julian muttered, releasing the safety catch on his weapon with a faint, metallic click. "They aren't here to negotiate or deliver messages. They came to clean house."
Lucas suddenly let out a stifled sob, burying his face into Julian’s chest.
"Dad, I'm scared," the boy cried softly, his small fingers clutching the fabric of Julian's black shirt.
Julian softened fractionally, resting a tattooed hand gently on his son's dark hair.

"I've got you, son. Nothing is going to touch you," Julian whispered fiercely, before his head snapped toward the main doors as a blinding beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, sweeping directly across their table.
