Chapter 13 - The Waterfront Trap

The laptop screen flickered violently, casting a harsh, ghostly blue light across Julian’s stern, scarred face. The live video feed from the exterior canal dock showed a grim reality: a dozen heavily armed tactical operatives standing in a semicircle around a lone black speedboat idling in the dark water.

At the center of the dock stood Viktor, his heavy gray coat blowing in the night breeze, holding a secure satellite phone to his ear while calmly smoking a cigarette.

"He set us up," Elena whispered, her hand flying to her mouth in absolute horror as she stared at the glowing screen. "Viktor never intended for us to escape through the river. He led us right into their primary extraction zone."

Clara pulled the twins closer to her chest, her dark eyes wide with terror as she looked between Julian and the glowing monitor.

"So all of this—the chase, the explosions, the lies—it was just a game to deliver the master database right back into the syndicate's hands?" Clara asked, her voice cracking with profound despair. "You trusted him, Julian. Just like you trusted everyone else in your miserable underworld."

Julian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently beneath his tattooed neck. He didn't answer Clara directly; instead, his dark eyes narrowed with a cold, terrifying focus as his fingers flew across the laptop keyboard, typing a rapid series of override commands.

"Dad, look!" Lucas cried out, pointing his small finger toward the top of the concrete reservoir wall where a heavy iron ventilation grate began to slide open with a loud mechanical screech.

A cloud of white tear gas canister dropped from the opening, hitting the concrete floor with a sharp metallic clatter and instantly hissing thick, blinding white smoke into the enclosed chamber.

"Gas! Hold your breath!" Julian bellowed, ripping off a strip of fabric from his ruined black shirt, dampening it with water from the pool, and tying it tightly across Lucas’s nose and mouth.

Elena did the same for Leo, coughing violently as the stinging, acrid smoke filled the stagnant air, burning their eyes and throats with searing intensity.

Clara stumbled backward, her vision blurring as she gasped for clean air, her knees buckling beneath her as the toxic fumes took hold of her lungs.

Julian swept Clara up into his muscular arms without a second hesitation, pulling her tight against his chest while grabbing both twin boys with his other arm, and surged forward toward the maintenance ladder leading up to the runoff hatch.

"Elena, take the laptop! Do not let go of that hard drive!" Julian ordered through clenched teeth, coughing harshly as the smoke grew thicker.

Elena grabbed the heavy tactical bag, scrambling up the steel rungs right behind Julian just as heavy tactical boots began descending from the ventilation shaft above.

Julian kicked the heavy steel hatch upward with a tremendous roar of effort, shattering the electronic lock and bursting out into the cool, damp night air of the canal dock just as a spotlight swept across the concrete, blinding them instantly.
