Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The air in the grand banquet hall felt heavy, smelling faintly of expensive champagne and melting wax. Julian stood frozen over his younger twin sons, his muscular frame tense inside the tailored black suit. Ink-black tattoos coiled around his thick neck and down his large hands, stark against the pristine white tablecloths. Beside him, Elena adjusted the sparkling straps of her golden evening gown, her eyes darting nervously toward the exit. Across the table, Clara gripped the edge of her plunging emerald green sequin gown, her knuckles turning white. Between them stood Leo and Lucas, identical nine-year-old boys swallowed up by miniature black tuxedos and oversized bowties.

Julian’s voice dropped to a dangerous, vibrating whisper that cut through the polite murmurs of the surrounding guests.

"I told you both to stay in the secure perimeter," Julian growled, his gaze locking onto Leo, who shrank back into his chair. "Do you have any idea what kind of people are currently looking for us in this building?"

"We only wanted to see the chandeliers, Dad," Leo stammered, his small voice trembling as a tear slipped down his cheek. "Lucas dropped his toy near the service elevator, and we just went to grab it."

Clara slammed her palm onto the table, the crystal glassware vibrating with a sharp chime.

"Don't you dare intimidate them, Julian!" Clara hissed, her dark eyes flashing with suppressed fury as she stepped between the towering man and her terrified children. "They are nine years old, not your underworld associates! You brought this chaotic life to our doorstep the moment you signed those papers last month!"

Julian turned his sharp gaze slowly toward Clara, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.

"My life keeps you breathing, Clara," Julian snapped back, leaning in close enough that the scent of cedar and gunpowder washed over her. "Every single luxury in this room, every guard outside this door, exists solely because I take the hits so you don't have to. You think you can lecture me about safety while standing there dripping in jewels bought with blood money?"

Elena placed a manicured hand gently on Julian’s rigid black-clad shoulder, trying to soothe the escalating tension.

"Julian, stop it, please," Elena murmured, her voice smooth and urgent. "Look around us. People are staring. If the syndicate's local scouts are already inside this hotel, we have less than three minutes before they make their move."

Lucas suddenly grabbed the hem of Julian’s black jacket, looking up with wide, frantic eyes.

"Dad, the man with the scar," Lucas whispered breathlessly. "He was standing by the kitchen doors just a minute ago. He said you forgot something important."

Julian froze entirely, the color draining from his face as a heavy silence fell over the table.
