Chapter 4 - The Breach

The blinding white beam of the tactical flashlight swept across the white tablecloth, stopping dead on Julian’s face. Instinctively, Julian shoved the twins deeper beneath the heavy wooden structure, positioning his muscular body as a human shield.

From the shadows near the vaulted entryway, a cold, amplified voice boomed through a megaphone, rattling the crystal chandeliers above.

"Attention guests, please remain seated and place your hands on your tables," a metallic voice ordered, devoid of any human warmth. "This is a private matter concerning a fugitive of the state. Cooperate, and no harm will come to civilians."

Clara stood up defiantly from the shadows, her emerald sequins catching the amber emergency light as she raised her voice above the murmurs of the terrified crowd.

"This is a private event! You have no authority here!" Clara shouted, her courage overriding her fear as she faced the glowing beam of light. "Get out of this hall immediately or I will have security remove you!"

"Clara, get down!" Julian roared, lunging upward to grab her arm and yank her back behind the table just as a deafening crack shattered the air.

A high-caliber bullet punched clean through the ornate wooden backrest of the chair Clara had occupied a fraction of a second earlier, showering them with splintered wood and fiberglass. Gasps and screams erupted from the surrounding tables as wealthy patrons finally realized this was not a drill.

Julian pulled Clara down hard against the marble floor, his heart hammering against his ribs as he shielded her with his own body.

"Are you insane?" Julian hissed into her ear, his breath hot and furious. "They aren't here to talk, Clara! They are here to execute every single one of us and make it look like a tragic accident!"

Elena kept the twins pinned safely against the floor, her face pale as death, though her hands remained remarkably steady as she scanned the perimeter.

"Julian, the balcony," Elena whispered urgently, pointing toward the heavy velvet curtains at the far end of the hall that led to an exterior fire escape. "It’s our only viable exit. The main doors are completely locked down by at least six armed operatives."

Julian nodded grimly, his mind calculating angles, distance, and potential cover.

"On my count, we make a break for the service corridor behind the dessert bar," Julian instructed, his voice dropping into a hardened command tone. "Elena, you take the boys. Clara, stay directly behind me. Do not look back, no matter what you hear."

Lucas clutched Julian’s hand tightly, his young face streaked with tears.

"Dad, I don't want to die," the boy whispered, breaking Julian’s stoic facade for a fraction of a second.

"You aren't dying today, buddy," Julian promised, tightening his grip on his weapon as he prepared to burst from the shadows.

Before he could give the signal, a heavy tactical boot stepped onto the table directly above them, peering down with a thermal scope.
