Chapter 2 - The Hidden Cipher

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat as the heavy silence stretched across the table. The glittering crystal chandeliers overhead suddenly felt less like festive decorations and more like the crosshairs of a sniper rifle. He slowly knelt down to eye level with Lucas, his imposing frame contracting into a defensive posture.
"What did the man look like, Lucas?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its previous anger and replaced by a cold, surgical focus. "Did he have a tattoo on his left cheek? Did he say anything else to you?"
Lucas whimpered softly, pressing his small back against the gold-plated chair.
"He wore a gray coat and had a bandage on his hand," Lucas whispered, his lower lip trembling uncontrollably. "He gave me this metal coin and told me to give it to the man in the black suit before the clock strikes nine."
Lucas opened his small palm to reveal a heavy, cold piece of silver stamped with an unfamiliar, intricate crest. Julian’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he stared at the metal token. It was the private insignia of the Raven Syndicate—an organization he had supposedly severed all ties with five long years ago.
Elena gasped, her hand flying to cover her mouth as she stared down at the silver coin resting in the boy's hand.
"That's impossible," Elena breathed, her golden gown rustling as she stepped back in horror. "We purged every single operational asset from this territory. How did they find us here tonight?"
Clara crossed her arms tightly over her emerald dress, glaring at Julian with a mixture of betrayal and deep-seated terror.
"You lied to us," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed rage. "You swore on your mother's grave that the syndicate was history, that we could finally walk down the street without looking over our shoulders. Was all of that just a comforting bedtime story to keep us compliant?"
Julian stood up abruptly, towering over the table once again, his tattoos flexing as he clenched his fists.
"I didn't lie, Clara," Julian growled, scanning the crowded banquet hall where oblivious guests laughed and clinked glasses. "I buried that life deep. But the past has a funny way of digging its own way out when someone on the inside decides to turn traitor."
"And who would that be?" Clara challenged, stepping closer to him despite the obvious danger radiating from his broad shoulders. "You're the one everyone fears! If someone sold us out, it leads straight back to your own inner circle."

Before Julian could answer, the ambient chatter of the banquet hall died down instantly. The overhead lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire grand ballroom into pitch-black darkness.
