Chapter 7 - The Cutting Torch

A shower of blinding blue sparks rained down from the top of the stairwell as the cutting torch tore through the heavy steel hinges of the fire door. The metallic screech of melting iron echoed off the concrete walls, drowning out the frantic breathing of the family trapped below.

"They're cutting the door," Elena said, her voice dropping into a flat, numb whisper as she stared up at the glowing metal seam. "We have less than sixty seconds before they breach this landing."

Julian didn't hesitate. He holstered his sidearm, vaulted down the remaining metal stairs, and threw his weight against a heavy utility access door marked with a yellow radiation symbol.

"Help me with this!" Julian ordered, the muscles in his back straining visibly through the fine fabric of his black shirt as he jammed his fingers into the door frame and heaved with all his superhuman strength.

Clara handed Leo to Elena, rushing over to press her hands beside Julian’s, throwing her body weight against the rusted iron panel. With a deafening shriek of rusted hinges and tearing bolts, the utility door finally burst open, revealing a dark, cavernous maintenance tunnel stretching deep beneath the hotel foundations.

"Inside, now!" Julian commanded, ushering the twins and Elena through the narrow opening before slipping in himself and pulling Clara behind him.

The maintenance tunnel smelled of stagnant water, ozone, and old iron. Overhead, rusted pipes hissed softly, dripping condensation onto the concrete floor. Julian slammed the utility door shut, wedging a heavy iron pipe through the industrial handles just as the heavy fire door upstairs crashed inward with a tremendous thud.

"They're in the stairwell!" Lucas whispered in abject terror, clamping both small hands over his mouth to muffle his breathing.

Julian pulled a small tactical flashlight from his pocket, clicking it on to reveal a narrow, winding subterranean corridor that branched off into three different directions.

"Which way, Julian?" Elena asked, shining her own phone light down the murky left passage where water pooled ankle-deep. "The garage is blocked, and every other exit from this sub-level leads straight back to the hotel lobby."

Julian crouched down, shining his light along the dusty floor until he spotted a faint smudge of fresh mud near the right-hand tunnel.

"Someone walked through here less than ten minutes ago," Julian noted, his sharp eyes narrowing. "And judging by the boot tread, it’s a standard-issue military boot worn by the syndicate's strike team."

Clara grabbed Julian’s arm, her fingers digging deep into his muscular forearm.

"If they're already down here waiting for us, we're walking straight into a trap," Clara argued, her voice tight with panic. "Why are you following their trail instead of running the other way?"

"Because the other way is a dead end," Julian answered firmly, gently removing her hand and holding his weapon ready at his side. "This tunnel leads to the old city storm drains. If we can reach the canal before they cut off the drainage grates, we have a fighting chance."

Suddenly, the heavy iron pipe wedged against the utility door behind them violently bent inward as a powerful hydraulic breaching tool slammed against the metal panel.

"They're breaking through the secondary door!" Lucas cried out, clutching his brother’s hand tightly as a shower of concrete dust rained down from the ceiling.

Julian grabbed the twins by their shoulders, pushing them forward into the dark, echoing tunnel.

"Run," Julian ordered fiercely. "Don't look back, just run!"
