Chapter 11 - The Overhead Ambush

The heavy iron grate overhead shattered inward with an ear-splitting crash, showering the damp brick chamber with shards of rusted iron and flying safety glass. Before anyone could react, a tactical operative dropped silently from the opening, landing in a deep tactical crouch with an assault rifle raised.

"Contact!" Julian roared, instantly shoving Clara and the twins behind a thick brick pillar as he whipped his firearm upward and squeezed the trigger twice.

The operative dropped instantly, taking a round to the ceramic body armor and collapsing heavily against the wet stone floor. But before Julian could rack another round into his chamber, two more armed figures rappelled rapidly down thick nylon ropes from the moonlight opening above.

"Viktor, get down!" Julian yelled across the chamber, firing three rapid suppression shots to keep the new arrivals pinned near the ladder.

Viktor didn't panic. With surprising agility for an injured man, he dove behind a rusted concrete drainage pipe, pulling a compact submachine gun from beneath his gray coat and returning fire with cold, practiced precision.

Clara pulled Leo and Lucas tight against her chest, their small bodies trembling violently as the deafening roar of automatic gunfire ricocheted off the enclosed brick walls, filling the underground space with the acrid stench of cordite and burning gunpowder.

"Mommy, I'm scared!" Lucas cried out, burying his face in Clara’s emerald gown while Elena shielded them from the falling concrete dust with her own body.

"Stay down, don't look up!" Clara shouted over the gunfire, her eyes wide with terror as she realized the horrifying truth of Viktor's words. If Julian really had stolen forty million dollars from dangerous syndicates, their entire peaceful life had been built on a foundation of shifting sand and stolen blood.

Julian fired his last remaining round, the slide locking back with a sharp click that signaled he was completely out of ammunition.

"I'm dry!" Julian cursed loudly, discarding the empty weapon and lunging forward to tackle a tactical operative who had just landed from the rope, driving his fist hard into the man's jaw with a sickening crunch.

The operative went limp instantly, but three more armed figures dropped through the opening, completely overwhelming the small chamber with superior numbers and heavy firepower.

Viktor popped up from behind his concrete cover, firing a rapid burst that shattered the overhead lights and plunged the brick chamber back into deep shadows, illuminated only by the pale moonlight streaming through the broken grate.

"Julian! Grab your family and move to the runoff sluice on the east wall!" Viktor shouted over the gunfire, tossing a heavy black tactical bag across the floor toward Julian's feet. "That's the only way out of this sector alive!"

Julian caught the bag effortlessly, his tattooed hands gripping the heavy nylon as he looked back at Clara, whose eyes burned with a devastating mix of fear, anger, and betrayal.

"Move!" Julian commanded, hauling Clara and the twins toward the dark runoff sluice while Elena covered their retreat with Viktor's tossed submachine gun.

As they plunged into the dark drainage pipe, a massive explosion rocked the brick chamber behind them, sealing the exit in a wall of fire and rubble.
