Chapter 8 - The Abandoned Briefcase

The damp morning grass soaked through Mark’s shoes as he stood alone in the courtyard, staring down at the leather briefcase Sarah had left behind. He flipped the latches open with frantic fingers. Inside, neatly stacked beside bundles of cash, were not just bank statements, but a collection of audio cassette tapes labeled with dates going back a decade.
Clara hurried out through the French doors, wrapping her arms around herself against the morning chill. "Did you catch her?"
"No," Mark panted, holding up one of the cassette tapes. "She dropped her stash. Look at this—audio logs. She must have recorded every conversation in this house."
Eleanor appeared slowly at the doorway, leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane. Her face was pale, her eyes hollow. She looked at the briefcase in Mark’s hands and recoiled as if she had seen a venomous snake.
"Those are the recordings," Eleanor whispered, her voice shaking. "She recorded everything I ever said in this study. She used them to prove she was indispensable."
"She used them to blackmail you," Clara corrected gently, stepping over to support the elderly woman by the elbow. "And now we have them. Whatever hold she had over you is broken, Eleanor."
"Is it?" Eleanor asked bitterly. "Sarah knows people. Dangerous people. She didn't just manage the estate accounts; she handled investments with private lenders who don't care about family loyalty."
Mark pulled a small portable tape recorder from the side pocket of the briefcase. He pressed the play button, sliding the volume up. A burst of static hissed from the tiny speaker before a familiar voice filled the quiet courtyard.
"The police report is sealed, Eleanor," Sarah’s recorded voice spoke clearly through the small machine. "If you don't sign the deed over to my shell corporation, I’ll leak the unedited mechanic's call to the press. Everyone will know you killed your husband to save your inheritance."
The confession played out in the open air, undeniable and chilling. Mark clenched his fists, the audio serving as the final confirmation of the nightmare they had been trapped in for years.
"We take this straight to the police," Mark said firmly, slipping the recorder into his pocket. "It's over for her."

Before they could turn back toward the house, a sudden screech of tires echoed from the front gates. Clara rushed around to the driveway just in time to see a black SUV speeding down the gravel road, leaving a cloud of dust in its wake. On the passenger seat of the retreating vehicle, she caught a brief glimpse of Sarah’s face staring back with a cold, triumphant smirk.
