Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The heavy mahogany dining table felt like a physical barrier between Clara and her mother. Clara stood up, holding her two-year-old daughter, Lily, who clutched a tiny stuffed rabbit with white fur. Mark, Clara’s husband, stepped closer, his jaw clenched, watching Eleanor, the elderly matriarch, whose stern expression hardened beneath the dim chandelier light.
"You’ve taken enough from this family," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the dining room with sharp accusation.
Clara felt a hot wave of disbelief wash over her. She pressed a trembling hand to her cheek, her green sweater feeling suddenly too tight against her chest.
"We’re leaving," Clara said firmly, her voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in her veins. She turned toward the heavy oak door, motioning for Mark to follow.
Eleanor stepped forward, thrusting a stiff manila envelope toward Mark’s chest. Her expression morphed into a mask of bitter justification.
"Your father gave you fifty-eight thousand dollars," Eleanor barked, trying to pin the blame on their past debts. "You think you can just walk away after bleeding this estate dry?"
Clara stopped at the threshold. She turned back, holding Lily tight against her shoulder. She looked past Eleanor, locking eyes with Sarah, Eleanor’s silent companion, who stood in the shadows holding an identical piece of paper with trembling fingers. Deep emotional tension suffocated the room, making it difficult to breathe.
"You really don't know, do you?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper that made Eleanor freeze in her tracks.
"Know what?" Eleanor sneered, though a flicker of genuine panic crossed her aged eyes. "What are you talking about?"
Clara didn't answer immediately. She shifted Lily in her arms and pulled a folded receipt from her coat pocket, holding it up for everyone to see.

"That money never came to us," Clara said, her eyes locked on Sarah. "Ask her where the deposit actually went."
