Chapter 10 - The Last Wire Transfer

Clara rushed across the room, peering over Mark’s shoulder at the glowing smartphone screen. The bank statement showed an outgoing wire transfer of four hundred thousand dollars, routed from the primary estate account directly to an international offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands. The timestamp read 8:42 AM—precisely while the police were interviewing them in the foyer.

"She’s draining the entire estate," Clara said in disbelief. "Even with the police here, she had a secondary access portal."

"She must have set up automated contingency transfers months ago," Mark realized, his hands trembling as he refreshed the page. "The moment the primary account was flagged, the backup protocol executed automatically."

Just then, the heavy oak door of the sitting room creaked open. The lead detective stepped back inside, holding a small, sealed envelope that had been tucked under the front door knocker.

"Found this outside," the detective said, handing it to Mark. "It appears to be addressed to you specifically."

Mark ripped the envelope open. Inside was a single printed photograph and a handwritten note. The photo showed Sarah standing in front of a private charter plane on a local airstrip, holding up her passport with a smug grin. The note, written in hasty, block letters, delivered the final blow.

"You can keep the house and the tapes," the note read. "By the time the court processes your paperwork, the accounts will be entirely empty. Thanks for the funding."

Clara stared at the photo, the bitter reality of Sarah’s escape settling over the room. They had exposed her crimes, broken her hold over Eleanor, and uncovered the tragic truth about the car crash, but Sarah had still managed to walk away with millions.

"We can trace the international accounts," Mark said stubbornly, though even he knew how difficult that legal battle would be.

"You won't have time," a frail voice interrupted from the settee.

Mark and Clara turned around. Eleanor had propped herself up on her elbows, her chest heaving as she pointed a trembling hand toward the heavy antique secretary desk in the corner of the room.

"There's something else," Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest as a sharp pain registered on her face. "In the false bottom of the secretary... the physical bearer bonds. Worth two million. Sarah didn't find them."

Before Mark could run to her side, Eleanor collapsed back against the velvet cushions, her eyes rolling back as her breathing stopped entirely.
