Chapter 5 - Dawn at the Estate

The early morning mist clung to the wrought-iron gates of the estate as Mark parked the sedan in the gravel driveway. The massive brick house looked cold and forbidding in the gray light of dawn. Clara clutched the manila envelope containing the bank statements and the threatening note in her coat pocket. They walked up the stone steps together, their footsteps crunching loudly in the stillness.
Mark didn't bother knocking; he twisted the brass doorknob, finding it unlocked. The front foyer was dim, smelling faintly of old polish and dried lavender.
"Hello?" Mark called out, his voice echoing up the grand staircase.
There was no immediate answer. They walked through the parlor toward the dining room where the confrontation had started just twenty-four hours earlier. The mahogany table was clean, stripped of the paperwork from the night before. But as they approached the back study, they heard muffled voices leaking through the half-open oak door.
"You should have handled them quietly, Sarah," Eleanor’s voice sounded weak, stripped of its usual commanding authority. "Now they have the statements. Everything is falling apart."
"I told you I would take care of it," Sarah replied, her voice lacking its usual deferential tone. "You’re the one who left the door unlocked for them yesterday. You wanted them to know."
Mark pushed the door open the rest of the way, startling both women. Eleanor was sitting in her high-backed leather armchair, looking smaller and frailer than she had the day before. Sarah stood beside her desk, holding a heavy glass paperweight in her hand, her eyes darting nervously toward the exit.
"So the truth finally comes out," Clara said, stepping into the room with her arms crossed over her green sweater. "You didn't just steal the fifty-eight thousand. You set us up to take the blame for your embezzlement."
Eleanor looked up, her stern expression crumbling into deep regret. She pointed a shaking finger toward the floor safe hidden behind the bookshelf.
"Open it," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. "The real will is inside, along with the documents Sarah forced me to sign."

Sarah lunged forward before Mark could reach the safe, slamming the heavy wooden cabinet shut and clutching a key tightly in her fist.
