Chapter 7 - The Brake Line Secret

Mark’s grip on Sarah’s shoulders loosened slightly, his eyes widening in horror as he slowly turned his head to look at his mother. Eleanor sat motionless in her chair, staring blankly at the Persian rug beneath her feet. The silence in the room became suffocating, broken only by the erratic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.
"Mother?" Mark’s voice cracked, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. "What is she talking about?"
Eleanor didn't look up. Her hands trembled violently in her lap as she clutched the armrests of the chair.
"The mechanic called two days before the trip," Eleanor whispered, the words dragging out of her as if pulling teeth. "He said the brake lines were corroded. He gave me an estimate for the repair. It was expensive, and... and the estate was running low on liquid cash because of bad investments."
"You skipped the repair," Clara said, horror dawning on her face. "You let him drive a car with failing brakes to save money?"
"I didn't think it would fail so soon!" Eleanor cried out, her voice finally breaking into a ragged sob. "He was just driving down to the hardware store in the mountains. I thought it could wait until the end of the month. I didn't know... I swear to God, I didn't know it would kill him."
Mark stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the mahogany desk. His breath came in short, panicked gasps. The man he had mourned for five years, the father whose memory he had carried with reverence, had died not from a random tragedy, but from a calculated act of financial negligence. And Sarah had known about it all along, using the dark secret to silence Eleanor and control the entire family fortune.
"You monster," Mark hissed, looking back and forth between the two women. "You both covered it up to protect your precious reputation and your estate."
Sarah seized the moment of distraction. While Mark was reeling from the revelation, she twisted out of his reach, snatched a heavy leather briefcase from behind the desk, and sprinted toward the French doors leading out to the garden.
"Stop her!" Clara shouted, pointing toward the fleeing assistant.

Mark vaulted over the desk, chasing Sarah through the open glass doors into the chilly morning fog. But as he burst out into the courtyard, he found the briefcase abandoned on the grass—and Sarah nowhere in sight.
