Chapter 3 - The Anonymous Threat

The glowing screen of the phone felt heavy in Clara’s hand as the ominous text message stared back at her. She tilted the screen toward Mark, his eyes darting away from the road for a fraction of a second to read the words. A muscle ticked in his jaw.
"Who could have sent that?" Mark asked, his voice laced with sudden caution. "We only just left the house. Nobody knew we were looking into the bank records except the people standing in that room."
"Which means someone inside that house is terrified of what we might find," Clara said, looking back out the frosted window.
They arrived home in silence, the routine of putting Lily to sleep acting as a mechanical distraction from the turmoil in their minds. Once the toddler was tucked safely into her crib, Clara and Mark sat at their small kitchen table. The modest apartment felt safe compared to Eleanor’s oppressive mansion, but the lingering threat of the text message made the walls feel thin.
Mark pulled out his laptop and logged into their old banking archive, searching for any digital footprint of the transfer from five years ago. The records were sparse, but one detail stood out like a sore thumb. The routing number attached to the incoming wire did not belong to their personal account. It had been redirected to a third-party trust fund registered under a PO Box in downtown Chicago.
"Look at this," Mark whispered, turning the laptop screen toward Clara. "The address on the trust fund matches the notary stamp on Sarah’s employment contract."
Clara leaned in, tracing the glowing letters with her finger. The pieces of the puzzle were starting to snap together with terrifying precision. Sarah wasn't just an obedient assistant; she was the architect of a systematic draining of the family estate, orchestrated right under Eleanor’s blind nose.
"We need to talk to my mother-in-law again," Clara decided, pushing back her chair. "She has a right to know that the person she trusts the most is robbing her blind."
"She won't listen to us," Mark warned. "She’ll think it’s another trick to get more money."

Before Clara could reply, a sharp knock echoed at their front apartment door, followed by the heavy thud of footsteps rushing down the concrete stairwell outside.
