Chapter 13 - The Federal Intervention

"Are you Mark Sterling?" the taller federal agent asked, flashing his badge with practiced precision.
"Yes," Mark replied, gripping the edge of the doorframe. "Who are you?"
"Special Agent Vance, FBI Financial Crimes Division," the agent stated calmly. "We’ve been tracking an international money laundering ring operating out of Chicago and the Cayman Islands. One of our primary targets, a woman operating under the alias Sarah Jenkins, attempted to clear a four-hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer from an account tied to this estate thirty minutes ago."
Clara stepped up beside Mark, relief washing over her face. "You caught her?"
"We intercepted the transfer and froze the receiving accounts," Agent Vance replied. "She was detained at a private airstrip twenty miles north before her charter could take off. But during our sweep of her associates, our investigators uncovered something much larger involving this household—extortion, forgery, and potential wrongful death linked to a vehicular accident five years ago."
Mark pulled his father’s letter and the bearer bonds from his jacket pocket, handing them to the agent along with the portable cassette recorder from Sarah’s briefcase.
"You won't even need to search for evidence," Mark said steadily. "It's all right here. Confessions, bank statements, audio recordings, and my father's final letter detailing the entire conspiracy."
Agent Vance accepted the items, his professional demeanor cracking slightly as he skimmed the contents of the letter and listened to a few seconds of the audio tape.
"This changes everything," Vance said, looking up at Mark and Clara with newfound respect. "This isn't just a local embezzlement case anymore. This is a multi-state criminal enterprise. You two have just handed us the missing puzzle pieces to dismantle a syndicate that’s been operating in plain sight for a decade."
The tension that had suffocated Mark and Clara since the opening argument in the dining room finally began to lift. The lies, the threats, and the manufactured debts were crashing down, replaced by the stark, undeniable light of truth and justice.
"Will Sarah face trial?" Clara asked, her voice firm.
"For fraud, extortion, and criminal negligence resulting in death," Vance nodded grimly. "She won't be seeing freedom anytime soon."
The agent stepped back, nodding respectfully before turning toward his waiting vehicle where local police units were already securing the perimeter. As Mark closed the heavy oak door for the final time, he looked down at the empty foyer where the family had torn itself apart just days before.
"It's over," Clara whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder.

"Not quite yet," Mark replied, looking toward the hallway leading to the back study. "There's one last thing we need to do before we lock these doors forever."
