Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The front door slammed shut behind them, sealing out the stifling atmosphere of the family estate. The cold night air hit Clara’s face, bringing a sharp clarity to her racing thoughts. Mark placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, his breathing heavy as they walked down the paved driveway toward their old sedan. Lily had fallen asleep against Clara’s collarbone, entirely unaware of the emotional earthquake that had just shattered their lives.
"Did you see Sarah's face?" Mark asked, opening the car door for Clara and helping her secure Lily’s car seat. "She looked like she had seen a ghost when you mentioned the deposit."
"She’s been hiding something for years," Clara replied, sliding into the passenger seat and shivering despite her thick green sweater. "My mother-in-law thinks she controls every dollar, but Sarah is the one managing the books. Or rather, embezzling them."
Mark started the engine, the heater humming softly to life. Instead of pulling away immediately, he stared up at the lit window of the master bedroom. Eleanor’s silhouette was visible against the lace curtains, watching them with intense scrutiny.
"We can't just drop this," Mark said, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel. "Fifty-eight thousand dollars is the exact amount my father supposedly wired to our joint account before he passed away. But it never cleared. We lost our first home because of that missing money."
"And your mother blamed us for being irresponsible," Clara added, her voice hardening. "She used it as a weapon at every family gathering to make us feel inferior."
They drove in silence through the quiet suburban streets, the headlights cutting a narrow path through the fog. The revelation about the money changed everything, turning a simple family dispute into a complex web of financial deceit. Clara looked down at her phone, wondering if she should call a lawyer immediately or confront Sarah directly the next morning.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed against her thigh. It was an incoming text from an unknown number. Clara unlocked the screen and stared at the glowing text message displayed in the dark cabin.

"Don't go digging into the past," the message read, "or you'll lose a lot more than just fifty-eight thousand dollars."
