Chapter 9 - The Glove on the Marble

The cold night air rushed through the open front doors, carrying the damp scent of wet earth and pine needles into the grand foyer. Lorenzo stood at the top of the sweeping staircase, the Walther PPK still gripped tightly in his right hand, his eyes fixed on the empty doorway. The leather glove lay alone on the polished white marble below, dark and ominous.
Elena hurried out of the study, her bare feet padding silently against the floorboards. She stopped a few feet behind her husband, wrapping her arms tightly around herself to ward off the sudden chill.
"Did... did you see who it was?" she whispered, her voice trembling as she stared down at the glove.
Lorenzo did not answer immediately. He slowly lowered his weapon, clicking the safety back into place with a sharp metallic snap, and descended the grand staircase step by step. His boots clicked rhythmically against the stone. When he reached the bottom, he knelt down, picked up the heavy leather glove by the fingertips, and turned it over in his hand.
"It’s not an intruder from the outside," Lorenzo said, his voice dangerously flat. He pulled a small silver monogrammed clip from the inside seam of the glove. "It belongs to Marcus Vance. My cousin."
Elena gasped, stepping down onto the landing. "Marcus? But Marcus lives in Boston. He manages the northern shipping division. Why would he be here breaking into our estate and tampering with your plane?"
"Because Marcus is the primary beneficiary of the Vance family trust if both of us—and my sister—happen to vanish under tragic circumstances," Lorenzo said, rising slowly to his feet. He turned his cold gaze up toward his wife. "A double tragedy followed by an unfortunate corporate liquidation. It’s a very clean plan, Elena. Almost as clean as the one you cooked up with the Zurich clinic."
"You still think I am working with him?" Elena’s voice rose in genuine indignation, her eyes flashing with a mix of fear and anger. "Marcus hates me! He has tried to edge me out of the board of directors for five years! If he is here, he isn't my ally—he’s here to finish us both off!"
Lorenzo walked slowly toward her, holding the glove out like evidence in a courtroom. "Then why did your private offshore account receive three separate wire transfers from a shell corporation registered under Marcus’s home address last month?"
The color drained from Elena’s face a second time that evening. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her knees trembled so violently that she had to grab the polished banister for support.
"You... you checked my accounts further back than the last three days," she whispered, the realization finally breaking through her defenses.
"I checked every financial ledger bearing your signature since the day we were married," Lorenzo said, stopping just inches from her. His voice was no longer angry; it was terrifyingly quiet, devoid of all human warmth. "I trusted you, Elena. I gave you my name, my home, and control over half my holdings. And all the while, you were setting up an exit strategy with the man who has wanted to ruin me since we were boys."

Before Elena could find a lie sophisticated enough to save her, the power suddenly flared back on. The crystal chandeliers overhead burst into blinding illumination, casting sharp, unforgiving light across the grand foyer. At the same moment, the heavy front doors slammed shut with a thunderous bang, driven by a sudden, violent gust of wind—and the massive iron deadbolts slid into place all by themselves, locking them inside.
