Chapter 12 - The Standoff on the Stairs

The air in the grand foyer grew thick and heavy, charged with a lethal tension that made every breath feel like inhaling crushed glass. Lorenzo kept the barrel of his Walther PPK locked dead on Marcus’s chest, his finger resting lightly on the trigger guard. His face was a mask of carved granite, but the slight twitch in his left eye betrayed the boiling fury beneath the surface.

"You always were a coward, Marcus," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, rhythmic purr. "Hiding behind sick relatives and stolen access codes because you couldn't hack it on the open market."

Marcus’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, the condescension in his eyes momentarily replaced by a flash of genuine venom. He shifted his weight, keeping his hand casually tucked inside his jacket pocket, where the override device hummed with silent power.

"Call it whatever you like, cousin," Marcus replied, his voice dropping its playful edge. "At the end of the day, empire isn't won by playing fair in the boardroom. It’s won by eliminating variables. And right now, you and your little secret-keeping wife are the only variables standing between me and the Vance holdings."

Elena stood frozen at the foot of the stairs, her hands pressed tightly over her mouth, her eyes darting frantically between the two men. The silk of her white dress was stained with dust and sweat, a stark contrast to the immaculate tailoring of the men facing off above and below her.

"Lorenzo, don't listen to him," Elena sobbed quietly, her voice trembling. "If you give him the bearer bonds, he won't let us leave alive. He’ll bury us right alongside my sister."

Marcus let out a dry, mocking laugh. "Listen to her, Lorenzo. For once in your marriage, your wife is telling you the absolute truth. You don't have a choice. Open the safe, or the girl in the Berkshire lodge stops breathing in exactly three minutes."

Marcus pulled a small digital timer from his pocket, pressing a button that lit a small red screen. The numbers began to tick backward in glowing, ominous red digits: 02:59... 02:58...

Lorenzo’s eyes flicked down to the timer for a fraction of a second, then back to Marcus’s face. A cold, calculating light entered his dark eyes—the same look he used years ago when executing the hostile takeover that made the Vance family a corporate titan.

"You think you’ve planned for every contingency, Marcus," Lorenzo said quietly. "You think because you hacked the estate’s security console and disabled the jet, you hold all the cards."

"The timer doesn't negotiate, Lorenzo," Marcus snapped, his arrogance returning as the numbers ticked down: 02:15... 02:14...

"No, it doesn't," Lorenzo agreed. He slowly lowered his gun arm—not toward the floor, but swinging it smoothly to the left.

Before Marcus could react, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the auxiliary corridor behind him. Clara stepped out from the shadows, holding a heavy double-barreled hunting shotgun leveled directly at the back of Marcus’s head.

"Drop the override, Mr. Vance," Clara said, her voice steady and completely devoid of fear. "Or I blow you right down these stairs."
