Chapter 8 - Darkness in the East Wing

The banker’s lamp on the desk sputtered and flickered out, leaving only the faint, pale glow of the moon filtering through the heavy velvet drapes. In the sudden, suffocating darkness, the sounds of the grand estate seemed to amplify—the groaning of the old oak floorboards, the distant ticking of the grandfather clock, and the ragged, shallow breathing of three people trapped in a single room.
"Stay where you are," Lorenzo’s voice cut through the shadows, low and commanding, coming from somewhere near the center of the study.
Elena pressed her back hard against the bookshelf, her fingers clawing blindly at the spines of the leather-bound books. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I didn't cut the cables, Lorenzo! I swear to you, I didn't know anything about a van at the hangar!"
"Save your breath," Lorenzo muttered. A metallic click echoed through the dark—the unmistakable sound of a safety catch sliding off the 9mm Walther PPK he kept locked in his desk drawer. "Clara, are you still by the door?"
"Yes, sir," Clara’s voice whimpered from the doorway, shaking with pure terror. "I can't see the handle. It’s too dark."
"Don't move. Stay flat against the wall," Lorenzo instructed.
Suddenly, a sharp scrape of a shoe echoed against the hardwood floor just outside the study door, followed by a muffled grunt. Clara let out a sharp, strangled gasp. A heavy thud shook the floorboards as something—or someone—collided violently with the outer hallway wall.
"Who's there?" Lorenzo shouted, pivoting toward the doorway with his weapon raised in the dark.
A heavy crash shattered the silence. The stained-glass transom window above the study door splintered outward, showering the hallway floor with glittering shards of colored glass. A dark, bulky shadow darted past the broken opening, moving with unnatural speed toward the grand staircase.
"Stay back!" Lorenzo ordered, lunging out of the study into the dark hallway.
"Lorenzo, don't go out there alone!" Elena screamed, stumbling forward from the bookshelf, her white dress catching the faint moonlight as she plunged blindly into the dark corridor after him.
Lorenzo reached the threshold just in time to see the shadowy figure vault over the polished mahogany banister of the sweeping staircase, dropping ten feet to the marble foyer below with a heavy, echoing thud. The intruder rolled smoothly across the floor and hit the front doors, throwing the deadbolts open with practiced ease.

Before Lorenzo could take aim down the stairwell, the heavy oak doors swung wide open, flooding the foyer with blinding moonlight, and the intruder vanished into the misty night, leaving behind only a single, heavy leather glove lying on the marble floor.
