Chapter 6 - The Awakening in Zurich

The words hung in the air between them, sharp and jagged like broken glass. Elena’s knees buckled slightly, but Lorenzo’s grip on her wrist kept her upright, anchoring her against the bookshelf like a pinned butterfly. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner suddenly sounded deafening, each second a hammer blow against her sanity.

"She... she woke up?" Elena repeated, the sentence sounding foreign and impossible on her tongue. "That’s a lie. The doctors said the neural damage was irreversible. They said she would never regain cognitive function."

"Medical science has advanced since you paid those specialists to write that convenient diagnosis," Lorenzo said coldly. He released her wrist, stepping back just far enough to let her slide down slightly against the polished wood of the shelf before she caught herself on the carpet. "She remembered enough to give the clinic director my private satellite number. She asked for her brother-in-law. She asked why she was locked in a white room with bars on the window."

Elena dropped to her knees, the silk of her white dress pooling in the dust at the base of the bookshelf. Her carefully styled dark hair came loose from its pins, falling across her face in wild, tangled waves. The sophisticated, untouchable mistress of the grand estate was gone, replaced by a cornered animal desperate for a way out.

"If she talks, Lorenzo, everything we built—every property, every account, every title—will be torn down by the courts," Elena pleaded, reaching out to grab the hem of his black trousers. "They will charge us with conspiracy, with unlawful confinement, with fraud! We can fix this. We have the capital. We can redirect her to another facility, somewhere out of reach, before anyone else—”

"Before anyone else finds out?" Lorenzo interrupted, looking down at her with an expression of profound disgust. He kicked his foot back gently, pulling his trousers free from her trembling fingers. "You think like a thief, Elena. You always have. You assume every problem can be solved with a wire transfer and a closed door."

"Then what do you propose we do?" Elena shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she looked up at him through her veil of dark hair. "Just hand everything over? Walk out into the street with nothing?"

"No," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a quiet, terrifying purr as he turned toward the study door. "We are going to Zurich. Tonight. My private jet is already fueled on the tarmac. And you are going to explain to my sister, face to face, why you traded her life for a bank statement."

Before Elena could drag herself off the floor to answer, the heavy study door swung wide open, revealing Clara standing in the hallway with a pale, frightened expression, holding a ringing telephone out toward them.

"Mr. Lorenzo," Clara stammered, her voice shaking. "It’s the airfield security. They say someone is tampering with the jet’s landing gear."
