Chapter 15 - The Echo of the Ice Pitcher

The sharp, shattering crash echoed off the marble walls of the grand foyer, freezing everyone in their tracks. The federal marshals instinctively drew their sidearms, turning toward the open double doors where a thick evening fog was rolling in from the estate gardens.

Standing in the threshold, framed by the pale moonlight and the swirling mist, was a figure no one expected to ever see walking under their own power again.

It was Eleanor Vance—Lorenzo’s sister.

She looked pale and thin, wrapped in a heavy wool trench coat over a hospital gown, but her dark eyes were sharp, clear, and burning with an unyielding intensity. She leaned slightly on a wooden cane, taking slow, deliberate steps across the threshold onto the marble floor.

Elena, still cuffed by the federal marshals, let out a choked, terrified gasp, her knees giving out completely as she dropped back to the stone floor.

"You..." Elena whispered, staring up in absolute disbelief. "How are you here? The clinic said—"

"The clinic lied, Elena," Eleanor said, her voice raspy from disuse but steady as she stepped past the officers. She stopped just a few feet away from Lorenzo, looking up at her brother with a faint, tight-lipped smile. "Just like you lied to everyone about my condition so you could systematically loot my personal estate while I was trapped in a medicated haze."

Lorenzo stepped forward, his expression breaking for the first time all evening as he reached out and gently pulled his sister into a steady, protective embrace. "You should be resting in Boston, Eleanor. You aren't strong enough to travel."

"I was strong enough to walk out the moment your security team breached the lodge," Eleanor replied softly, pulling back just enough to look at him with fierce affection. "And I was certainly strong enough to come here and make sure this house was finally cleansed of the poison that nearly destroyed us all."

She turned her dark gaze toward Elena, who sat huddled on the marble floor between the marshals, her white silk dress ruined, her hair hanging in wild tangles around her tear-streaked face.

"It’s over, Elena," Eleanor said quietly. "The accounts have been frozen, the shell companies have been seized by federal investigators, and every document you forged has been entered into the court record."

The marshals lifted Elena to her feet, guiding her firmly toward the open doors as the cool night air swept through the grand hallway, carrying away the lingering scent of cedarwood, dust, and melting ice. Elena did not look back. She stared straight ahead into the darkness as the heavy mahogany doors closed behind her for the very last time.
