Chapter 11 - The Second Key

The photograph seemed to burn a hole through the heavy silence of the hallway. Lorenzo stared down at the image of his sister, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles stood out like corded steel. The quiet menace that usually defined his demeanor had vanished, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp focus that was far more dangerous.
"Lorenzo..." Elena whispered, taking a hesitant step forward. She peered over his shoulder at the photograph, her breath hitching in her throat. "That... that room isn't in Zurich. That’s the old family hunting lodge in the Berkshire mountains. The one your father sealed up ten years ago."
Lorenzo slowly stood up, sliding the photograph into his inner suit jacket pocket. He turned to look at her, his dark eyes completely devoid of mercy.
"The hunting lodge requires two independent mechanical keys to unlock the lower vault," Lorenzo said, his voice deadly quiet. "One was kept in my private study safe. The other was kept in your personal jewelry box upstairs. My safe was opened with a master code only you and I knew."
Elena stepped back, shaking her head frantically. "I didn't give Marcus the code, Lorenzo! I swear to God, I didn't!"
"Then how did he know the combination?" Lorenzo demanded, taking a slow step toward her. "How did he walk through a biometric security system that registers every heartbeat in this house?"
"Because he didn't use a code," a calm, smooth voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.
Both Lorenzo and Elena whipped their heads upward. Standing on the landing, casually leaning against the polished mahogany banister as if he owned the entire estate, was Marcus Vance. He wore a charcoal-gray suit that matched Lorenzo’s, his dark hair neatly combed, a faint, condescending smile playing on his lips. In his right hand, he tossed a small electronic override device up and down, catching it with effortless precision.
"Hello, cousin," Marcus said smoothly, descending the stairs at a leisurely pace. "I must say, your domestic drama is more entertaining than a Broadway play. Though Elena’s acting has always been a bit heavy on the melodrama."
Lorenzo’s hand tightened around the grip of his Walther PPK, raising the barrel until it was aimed squarely at Marcus’s chest. "Stop right there, Marcus. One more step and I put a bullet through your shoulder."
Marcus didn't even flinch. He stopped halfway down the stairs, spreading his arms wide with an expression of supreme confidence. "Go ahead, Lorenzo. Shoot me. But before you pull the trigger, you might want to consider who is currently holding the oxygen tank feeding your dear sister in the Berkshire lodge—and what happens to her air supply if my heart stops beating."
Elena screamed, lunging forward toward the stairs. "You bastard! If you hurt her, I will kill you myself!"
May you like
Marcus chuckled, a cold, empty sound. "Save your breath, Elena. You’ve done quite enough talking for one evening. Now, Lorenzo... drop the weapon, open the wall safe in your study, and hand over the bearer bonds, or we’re going to have a very quiet funeral in the mountains by morning."
