Chapter 3 - The Open Vault

The brass key gleamed in the dimming afternoon light, casting a tiny, distorted reflection of Elena’s terrified face. She froze mid-motion, her hand hovering in the air before slowly dropping to her side. The color drained entirely from her cheeks, leaving her skin the pale, chalky white of an old statue.

"My office?" Elena whispered, her voice hollow, stripped of all its previous defiance. "You went into my private study?"

Lorenzo stepped past her, his broad shoulders brushing against the delicate fabric of her white dress. The scent of rain and expensive cedarwood followed in his wake. He did not look at her as he walked toward the grand double doors leading to the east wing, where the estate’s administrative hub and safe room were located.

"It is my house, Elena," Lorenzo said, pausing with his hand on the polished brass doorknob. "And that safe contains the ancestral deeds, not to mention the offshore routing numbers you claimed to know nothing about when the auditors visited last month."

Clara scrambled backward on her knees, desperately trying to get out of the path of the master’s feet. Lorenzo glanced down, his expression softening just a fraction—not with warmth, but with a cold, calculated pity.

"Stand up, Clara," Lorenzo ordered, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Go down to the kitchens and tell Mrs. Gable to prepare the blue study for a long conversation. You are not dismissed. You are a witness."

Clara nodded rapidly, scrambling to her feet with unsteady legs, and hurried down the auxiliary corridor without uttering another word.

Elena stood frozen by the console table, her fingers digging into the polished mahogany edge until her knuckles turned white. The glass pitcher of melting ice sat between them, a silent monument to the shattered illusion of her domestic perfection.

"You cannot prove anything," Elena muttered, her voice shaking violently as she stared at his broad back. "The documents in that safe were placed there by legal counsel for restructuring. You are misinterpreting standard corporate maneuvering."

Lorenzo slowly turned his head back over his shoulder, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

"Corporate maneuvering doesn't usually involve wire transfers to an unregistered Swiss shell corporation bearing your maiden name," Lorenzo said quietly. He pushed the heavy oak door open, revealing the dark, wood-paneled hallway beyond. "Come along, Elena. Let us review the paperwork together."
