Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Study

The private study smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and impending doom. Heavy velvet drapes blocked out the dying light of the afternoon, leaving the room illuminated only by the green-shaded banker’s lamp on Lorenzo’s massive oak desk. The wall safe behind the sliding bookshelf stood wide open, its heavy steel door hanging ajar like a broken jaw.

Elena walked in slowly, her high heels clicking softly against the Persian rug. She kept her chin high, though her limbs felt like lead. Lorenzo sat behind the desk, not bothering to take off his suit jacket. He gestured to the leather armchair opposite him, his fingers drumming a slow, steady rhythm against the blotter.

"Sit," he commanded.

Elena remained standing, crossing her arms tightly over her chest to hide the tremors wracking her frame. "I will not sit as if I am on trial in my own home. If you suspect me of wrongdoing, call the police or our family attorneys. This amateur theater is beneath you, Lorenzo."

"Is it?" Lorenzo leaned forward, opening a manila folder that lay flat on the desk. He pulled out a single sheet of paper covered in dense rows of numbers and digital signatures. "This is a wire receipt dated three days ago. It bears your electronic authorization key. Fifty thousand dollars transferred from our joint holding account to an account in the Cayman Islands."

Elena’s eyes darted to the paper, then back to her husband’s unreadable face. A bitter, defensive laugh escaped her lips, sounding sharp and hollow in the confined space.

"Fifty thousand? Is that what this is about?" she snapped, abandoning her facade of calm entirely. "You spend ten times that amount on your vintage car collection every quarter without blinking an eye! I needed liquidity for private investments. A woman of my position cannot simply ask her husband for pocket change every time she wishes to secure her own future."

Lorenzo did not raise his voice. He simply watched her, his gaze steady and clinical, like a surgeon observing a spreading infection.

"It wasn't for investments, Elena," Lorenzo said softly. He pulled out a second sheet, sliding it across the leather desk toward her. "It was sent to a private medical clinic in Zurich. A clinic specializing in long-term psychiatric rehabilitation and memory care under an assumed identity."

The blood rushed out of Elena’s head so fast that the room tilted violently. She grabbed the edge of the desk to steady herself, her breath catching in her throat.

"That... that is none of your business," she choked out, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.

Lorenzo stood up slowly, towering over the desk, his shadow swallowing her whole. "Whose identity, Elena? Who are you paying to keep hidden?"
