Chapter 2 - The Weight of Whispers

The silence that followed Lorenzo’s declaration hung heavy in the vaulted foyer, thick enough to suffocate. Elena forced her jaw to relax, attempting to smooth the frantic lines of terror from her forehead, but the icy sweat beading at her hairline betrayed her. She set the silver tray down on a nearby mahogany console table with a sharp, echoing clatter, the glass pitcher vibrating from the impact.
"You are jumping to conclusions, Lorenzo," Elena said, her tone dropping into a carefully rehearsed register of wounded innocence. "Clara has always been unstable. Just last week, she was mumbling to herself about things that never happened. I only came down here to calm her and fetch fresh water."
Clara raised her head slightly, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and lingering adrenaline. She looked up at Lorenzo, her lips parting as if she wanted to scream the truth, but the sheer presence of the master of the house paralyzed her vocal cords.
Lorenzo did not look at his wife. He kept his gaze locked on Clara’s trembling hands, which were pressed flat against the cold marble floor.
"Clara," Lorenzo said softly, the quiet menace in his tone far more terrifying than a shout. "Look at me and tell me exactly what you heard before my wife dropped her composure."
Elena stepped forward, her white dress rustling like dry leaves. "Lorenzo, stop this madness right now! You are humiliating me in front of the staff over a hysterical servant. If you have doubts about my loyalty, we can discuss this in private, upstairs, like civilized adults."
"Civilized adults do not lie about missing financial ledgers, Elena," Lorenzo replied without turning his head. He pulled a gold pocket watch from his vest, flipped it open with a crisp click, and closed it just as fast. "Now, Clara. Speak."
Clara swallowed hard, her throat clicking audibly in the quiet hall. She glanced sideways at Elena’s manicured shoes, then up at Lorenzo’s unyielding face.
"She... she was on the phone by the conservatory doors," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. "She said the transfer was complete, and that once you signed the new partnership papers tomorrow, the accounts would be cleared entirely. She said you were a blind fool."
Elena lunged forward, her hand raised as if to strike the kneeling woman, but a blinding flash of silver caught her eye. Lorenzo had drawn a small, heavy brass key from his pocket, holding it suspended between them.

"You left your office safe wide open," Lorenzo whispered coldly.
