Chapter 8 - The Family Betrayal

Julian’s face crumpled, the slick corporate armor he wore instantly dissolving into desperate self-preservation. He dropped heavily to his knees beside the scattered photographs, his hands trembling as he tried to scoop the incriminating documents back into the open briefcase.

"It’s not what it looks like, Maya! You have to listen to me!" Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with panic. "The company was expanding too fast. The board wanted aggressive growth in every domestic market, but the profit margins were shrinking. Elena and I... we just found a way to bridge the gap!"

"By stealing from your own family?" Maya asked, standing up slowly and looking down at her cousin with a mixture of disgust and profound pity. "By counterfeiting merchandise, laundering money through offshore accounts, and running a criminal enterprise under the Vance family name?"

"We kept the stock prices high!" Julian shouted defensively, his desperation turning into bitter resentment. "If the board had seen the real numbers two years ago, the stock would have tanked. We saved the company, Maya! We saved your inheritance!"

"Don't you dare try to spin this as an act of corporate loyalty," a booming, authoritative voice echoed from the entrance of the boutique.

Everyone froze. The glass double doors swung open wide, revealing Chairman Arthur Vance himself. The elderly billionaire walked into the store with a slow, heavy gait, his silver hair neatly combed and his tailored dark suit immaculate. Despite his age, his dark eyes burned with an intense, unyielding fire that made even Marcus step aside in deference.

Julian turned pale, his jaw dropping so low he looked like he might dislocate it. "Uncle Arthur... I—I didn't know you were flying in today."

"Clearly," Arthur said, stopping a few feet away from his nephew. He looked down at the photographs and the ledger scattered across the marble floor, taking in the full scope of the betrayal without a single muscle in his face twitching. "I gave you everything, Julian. I put you through the finest universities, handed you a vice presidency at twenty-eight, and trusted you with the keys to my empire. And you repaid that trust by turning my flagship store into a criminal syndicate."

"Uncle, please," Julian begged, scrambling across the floor to grab the hem of the Chairman’s trousers. "We can fix this quietly. We can handle it internally. If the SEC finds out about this, the board will vote us all out, the stock will plummet, and decades of family legacy will vanish overnight!"

Arthur looked down at his nephew with chilling detachment. He did not pull away, but his gaze was as cold as winter stone.

"The Vance legacy was built on integrity, Julian," Arthur said quietly. "A legacy built on theft and lies is not worth saving. It is worth burning to the ground so something honest can grow in its place."

May you like

Arthur raised his hand, and two federal agents in plainclothes, who had slipped quietly into the boutique behind him, stepped forward and clamped heavy steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists.
