Chapter 4 - The Audit Begins

The three police officers strode into the boutique with an air of grim determination, their boots clicking sharply against the marble. The mall manager, sweating profusely despite the aggressive air conditioning, rushed past them, waving a bundle of legal documents in the air. The terrified murmurs of the wealthy onlookers swelled into a cacophony of nervous chatter as the reality of a major corporate raid unfolded before their eyes.

"Ms. Vance," the lead officer said, stopping directly in front of the kneeling store owner. "We have received an emergency fraud complaint from the Vance Group corporate office, coupled with a court-ordered preservation of assets."

Elena looked up, her mascara running in dark streaks down her pale cheeks. The haughty, superior woman who had screamed curses minutes earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate shell of a person clinging frantically to denial.

"This is a mistake!" Elena shrieked, her voice cracking violently. "I have doubled revenue for three consecutive quarters! I am the jewel of this district! You can't do this to me!"

Marcus stepped over Elena’s trembling form, handing the satellite phone back to his inner pocket before gesturing to the corporate auditors who were now swarming through the glass doors behind the police. Half a dozen men and women in dark gray suits carried heavy metal briefcases, moving with the cold efficiency of a SWAT team securing a hostile compound. They immediately fanned out across the boutique, ignoring the shocked shoppers as they bypassed the display racks and headed straight for the administrative offices in the back.

"Your quarterly reports were a fiction, Elena," Maya said, her voice calm and measured as she looked down at the disgraced manager. "My father’s forensic team flagged anomalies in your inventory sourcing weeks ago. You just gave us the legal probable cause we needed to tear open your books."

Elena froze. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking almost translucent under the harsh showroom lights. The arrogance that had defined her reign vanished, replaced by the sudden, terrifying realization that her financial crimes extended far beyond mere bad customer service.

"You... you were investigating me already?" Elena whispered, her lips trembling so hard she could barely form the words.

"You were a leak in a very large ship," Maya replied indifferently, turning her back on the kneeling woman to face the lead auditor. "Find everything. Leave nothing untouched. If she sold counterfeit inventory under our brand name, I want her facing federal prison time."

The lead auditor nodded sharply, pulling a pair of white cotton gloves from his pocket as he reached for the brass handle of the manager's private office door. The mall manager stepped forward, his face pale as he pointed a shaky finger at a heavy iron safe partially visible through the frosted glass of the back room.

"She kept the secondary ledger in there," the mall manager blurted out, eager to distance himself from the sinking ship. "She bragged about it at the regional gala last month. Said corporate would never look twice at a high-performing branch."

Marcus placed a heavy hand on the mall manager's shoulder, stopping him in his tracks. The auditor turned the combination dial on the safe, and with a heavy, satisfying metallic click, the door swung open.
