Chapter 10 - The Coup at Headquarters

On the high-definition security screens, the boardroom at Vance Group headquarters was bathed in the harsh, flashing lights of emergency cameras. A dozen high-ranking executives were seated around the massive mahogany table, talking over one another in frantic whispers. At the head of the table sat Thomas Vance, Arthur’s ambitious younger brother and Maya’s estranged uncle, looking directly into the camera lens with an expression of smug, unearned triumph.

"What is Thomas doing?" Maya whispered, her eyes locked on the glowing monitor.

Arthur’s face hardened instantly into granite. "He’s calling an emergency vote of no confidence. He thinks my absence today means I’ve relinquished control."

The audio feed crackled to life through the boutique's speakers, carrying Thomas’s smooth, arrogant voice across the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Thomas spoke into the microphone, his tailored suit immaculate and his silver hair perfectly styled. "As you know, our Chairman, Arthur Vance, has been absent from executive meetings for weeks due to undisclosed health concerns. Simultaneously, our flagship retail branch has just been subjected to an unannounced federal raid involving multi-million-dollar fraud."

Murmurs of shock rippled through the boardroom on the screen. Several directors shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs, while others nodded along with calculated gravity.

"This is an unmitigated disaster for our brand equity," Thomas continued, leaning forward and resting his palms on the table. "We cannot allow our global empire to be dragged down by poor oversight and failing leadership. Therefore, pursuant to Article 9 of our corporate charter, I am calling an immediate vote to strip Arthur Vance of his chairmanship and appoint an interim executive committee led by myself."

In the boutique, Mr. Hayes stopped packing his briefcase, his eyes darting anxiously toward the Chairman. "Sir, Article 9 does permit a provisional vote if the Chairman is physically absent from a quarterly review, but only if two-thirds of the voting shares concur."

"Thomas has been quietly buying up proxy votes from the regional directors for the past six months," Arthur said, his voice dangerously calm. "He thinks he has the numbers."

"We can't let him steal the company," Maya said, her fists clenching at her sides. "If he takes control, he’ll bury the forensic audit, sweep the counterfeiting scandal under the rug, and continue running the empire into the ground for his own profit."

Arthur looked down at his daughter, a faint, knowing smirk touching the corners of his mouth. "He thinks he has the numbers, Maya. But he forgot about the golden share."

May you like

Maya’s eyes widened. "The golden share is tied to your direct lineage. It can only be transferred to..." She paused, realization dawning. "To me."
