Chapter 7 - The Cousin's Secret

The tension in the boutique spiked so violently that the air felt thick and metallic. Julian Vance forced a nervous chuckle, but his eyes darted continuously toward the exit, calculating his escape routes. Marcus remained immovable, his broad shoulders blocking any path toward the glass doors, while Mr. Hayes stood silently behind the desk, clutching the incriminating ledger like a shield.

"You were reviewing the inventory audits, Julian?" Maya asked, her voice dangerously quiet. She walked slowly around the mahogany desk, closing the distance between them step by deliberate step. "In a locked back room? While the store manager was being arrested for multi-million-dollar fraud?"

"Well, as Senior Vice President of Regional Operations, oversight is literally my job description," Julian replied, his voice rising in an unconvincing display of executive authority. He tried to puff out his chest, but the nervous twitch in his left eye betrayed his absolute panic. "Frankly, I’m shocked you’re wandering around a retail floor unsupervised. Father didn't mention you were back in the city."

"My father didn't mention a lot of things," Maya replied, stopping just an arm’s length away from her cousin. She gestured toward the heavy briefcase clutched in his grip. "What’s in the case, Julian? More operational oversight?"

Julian’s knuckles turned white as his grip tightened on the leather handle. "It’s just internal documents. Confidential board memos. You know how these things work. Proprietary information that has no business being seen by junior staff—or wandering heirs."

"Open it," Maya commanded.

"I will do no such thing!" Julian snapped, stepping backward until his spine hit the edge of a clothing display rack, sending a cascade of silk scarves fluttering to the floor. "I report directly to the board of directors, not to you, Maya! You have no authority to demand—"

"I have the authority of the Chairman's primary proxy," Maya interrupted, her gaze freezing him in place. "And considering your frequent, unrecorded visits to this specific branch, combined with Mr. Hayes's discovery of funds wired to an unlisted offshore entity bearing our family name, I suggest you cooperate before I let Marcus handle the inspection."

Marcus took one slow, deliberate step forward. The sheer physical threat of the bodyguard was enough to break Julian’s fragile composure. With a sharp gasp of defeat, Julian dropped the briefcase onto the marble floor. The brass clasps snapped open under the impact, spilling its contents across the polished tiles.

Instead of board memos, hundreds of high-resolution photographs, handwritten deposit slips, and dual-signature bank authorization forms spilled out across the floor. Maya knelt down, picking up a photograph that showed Julian shaking hands with Elena Vance outside a private Swiss bank, dated only three weeks ago.

"You weren't just overseeing her operations, Julian," Maya whispered, looking up with eyes filled with profound betrayal. "You were her silent partner."
