Chapter 12 - The Race Against the Clock

The black town car cut through the rain-slicked downtown streets with aggressive speed, its tires hissing against the asphalt as it wove through evening traffic. Inside the leather-lined cabin, the atmosphere was charged with electricity. Arthur sat quietly in the corner, resting his eyes, while Maya stared intently at her tablet, reviewing the real-time voting percentages streaming from the corporate headquarters downtown.

"Thomas is moving faster than anticipated," Maya said, her fingers flying across the screen. "He has eight of the twelve directors on his side already. If the remaining four fold before we reach the building, the emergency vote will pass before we can legally invoke the golden share."

Marcus’s eyes flickered in the rearview mirror as he navigated a tight turn around a city bus. "Traffic on Fifth Avenue is heavily congested, Ms. Vance. If we take the subterranean freight tunnel beneath the financial district, we can bypass the blockade entirely."

"Do it," Arthur commanded without opening his eyes. "Thomas thinks he has won the war before the first battle has even begun. Let’s remind him why he was always the younger brother."

The town car swerved sharply to the left, plunging down a steep, poorly lit ramp that led directly beneath the soaring skyscrapers of the financial district. The hum of the city above faded into a hollow, echoing rumble as the vehicle accelerated through the concrete tunnels. The headlights cut through the damp gloom, illuminating ancient pipes and forgotten service doors that connected the city’s vast subterranean infrastructure to the basements of corporate headquarters.

"We have three minutes before the final vote is tabulated on the floor," Maya warned, refreshing her screen as a progress bar crept steadily toward completion.

"They won't finish tabulation until Thomas officially calls for the gavel," Arthur said calmly, opening his eyes and adjusting his cuffs. "And Thomas loves an audience. He won't close the vote until he's sure every camera in the city is broadcasting his triumph."

The car slammed to a halt beside a heavy steel freight elevator marked with the Vance Group logo. Marcus killed the engine and was out of the door in a heartbeat, pulling open Maya’s side and extending a hand to help her step out onto the concrete floor.

"This service elevator connects directly to the executive sub-lobby behind the boardroom," Marcus reported, swiping his master security pass against the wall reader. The heavy steel doors groaned open, revealing a vertical shaft bathed in stark fluorescent light.

As Maya stepped into the elevator car, she adjusted the lapel of her grey dress, her posture radiating an absolute, unshakeable authority that made her look every bit the rightful heir to an empire.
