Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Sins

The auditor pulled a thick, leather-bound ledger from the open safe, its pages crammed with handwritten notes, coded initials, and columns of figures that bore no resemblance to the official digital reports submitted to corporate headquarters. The ambient noise in the boutique died down to absolute zero as every eye in the room fixed on the incriminating book. Even the wealthy patrons, who moments before had been whispering behind their designer clutches, now watched in stunned silence, realizing they were witnessing the public execution of a high-society predator.

"Well?" Maya asked, stepping toward the auditor as he flipped through the brittle yellow pages. "What are we looking at, Mr. Hayes?"

Mr. Hayes adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his expression darkening with every page he turned. "It’s worse than embezzlement, Ms. Vance. It’s a systemic counterfeiting ring. She was cycling authentic luxury inventory out the back door to private buyers in Europe and replacing them with high-grade replicas from overseas sweatshops, pocketing the multi-million dollar difference."

Elena let out a low, animalistic gasp and lunged forward from her kneeling position, desperately trying to grab the ledger from the auditor’s hands. Before she could cover a single foot of distance, Marcus’s heavy hand descended upon her shoulder like a hydraulic press, pinning her instantly to the marble floor.

"Stay down," Marcus commanded coldly.

"You're ruining my life!" Elena screamed, thrashing beneath the bodyguard's immovable grip. "I built this branch! Without me, this store is nothing!"

"You built nothing," Maya retorted, walking over until she stood directly above the thrashing woman. "You rented space on my family’s property, wore our logo on your lapel, and stole from the people who trusted you. And the worst part? You thought your cruelty toward strangers went unrecorded."

Maya reached into the pocket of her grey dress and pulled out her own personal smartphone, tapping the screen twice before holding it up. A crystal-clear audio recording began to play through the boutique’s high-end surround sound speakers.

"People like you do not belong in my establishment," Elena’s amplified voice rang out clearly across the room, repeating her earlier tirade word for word. "Now get up and crawl back to whatever gutter you crawled out of!"

The patrons gasped again, visibly disgusted as they heard the unfiltered malice in Elena’s recorded voice. The evidence was airtight, unarguable, and broadcasted to the very elite social circle Elena had spent her entire life trying to impress.

"Play that for the lead detective, Mr. Hayes," Maya instructed quietly, sliding her phone back into her pocket. "And make sure a copy goes straight to the district attorney’s office before the hour is out."

As the police officers moved in with handcuffs, Elena stopped struggling, her body going completely limp against the cold floor as she stared blankly at the polished reflection of her own ruined face in the glass door.
