Chapter 8 - The Man in the Trench Coat

The man descended the basement stairs with a heavy, deliberate thud, his boots echoing off the concrete floor. He didn't look like a corporate associate or a police officer. He wore leather gloves, and the collar of his trench coat was turned up high against the chill, shadowing the sharp, angular lines of his face.

Chloe pressed herself flat against the water heater, holding her breath as the man walked straight toward the brick foundation wall where the biometric scanner was blinking its silent warning.

"Who’s down there?" Mrs. Gable stepped forward, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound commanding. "This is private property. Get out before I call the authorities."

The man didn't answer right away. He pulled a small electronic device from his coat pocket, plugging it directly into a hidden port beneath the glowing scanner. The rhythmic alarming sound stopped instantly, replaced by a soft, steady green light.

"Mrs. Gable, right?" the man spoke, his voice deep, raspy, and completely devoid of warmth. "You should have stayed in your cottage. Victoria’s patience wears thin when people start digging in places they don't belong."

"You work for her," Chloe realized, stepping out from the shadows of the water heater, her fear momentarily eclipsed by pure anger. "You’re the one who helped her break into my mother’s private files."

The man turned his head slowly, fixing his cold, gray eyes on Chloe. He didn't look surprised to see her. In fact, he looked like he had been expecting her all along.

"I don't work for Victoria," the man replied, pulling off his leather gloves to reveal a long, jagged scar running across his knuckles. "I work for the man who hired Victoria to infiltrate this household in the first place."

Mrs. Gable gasped, taking a half-step back. "That’s impossible. Richard wouldn't..."

"Richard is a puppet," the man interrupted, walking slowly toward Chloe with the crowbar resting casually over his shoulder. "He ran his tech firm into the ground three years ago through bad investments. Victoria didn't just stumble into his life—she was planted there by a venture capital syndicate to force a hostile takeover of the entire estate. And your mother figured it out just in time to get herself killed."

Chloe’s knees nearly buckled beneath her. The words hit her like a physical blow. Killed. Not an accident. Murder.

"You're lying," Chloe breathed, tears blurring her vision. "The police report said her brakes failed on the mountain pass."

"The police report was bought and paid for before the car even hit the ravine," the man said smoothly, stopping just a few feet away from her. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, tarnished silver pocket watch—the exact watch her grandfather had carried every single day of his life. "Recognize this? Your father traded it to the syndicate last night to settle his final gambling debt. And now, they're coming for the house, the company, and everything your mother left behind."

Before Chloe could process the terrifying depth of the betrayal, the man raised the heavy metal crowbar, bringing it down hard against the brick foundation wall right beside the biometric scanner.

With a deafening crash, the masonry shattered inward, revealing a hidden steel door that swung open into the pitch-black darkness of the underground vault.
